Hope Makes A Comeback

Whoooooo! Now we go to school.

The election of Michael Steele as the new chairman of the Republican National Committee is a stimulus package for the GOP—a stimulus that will actually work. For the first time since Newt Gingrich left Congress, the Republican Party has a real leader.

I’m embarrassed to admit that I didn’t think Steele could pull it off. I figured that he would be doomed by allegations that he wasn’t really conservative enough for the position, and that a candidate like Ken Blackwell or Saul Azunis would get the gig. Thank goodness I was wrong. Yesterday, Steele showed that anything is possible in America.

Steele is a committed conservative, a gifted speaker, a big-picture thinker. He admires Reagan, but he recognizes that we are not in Reagan’s time, and that the country needs a new conservatism for a new era. Under Steele, the GOP could reach heights it hasn’t seen since the 1980s.

The last two months have been distressing for conservative Republicans. (I would argue that the last eight years have been distressing for conservative Republicans because of the former President’s fetish for big government, but that’s for another day.) We lost the White House by running a weak, old, ideologically incoherent candidate against the most politically skilled Democrat in ages. Our Vice Presidential candidate was smeared in a manner similar to the way Robert Bork was treated in 1987. The GOP began to morph into a rump party as blacks, Latinos, Asians and young whites washed their hands of the Republicans, seemingly for good.

Can Steele reverse this trend? If he can’t do it, it cannot be done. Luckily, Steele has the talent necessary to make things work.

"If he can’t do it, it cannot be done."

How about "Fear the Steele! Anyone who doesn't support Steele is a liar!" Oh...that's already been tried. Alright, how about "Steele: the First Woman President!" No...that won't work. Okay..."Steele for a Free Trade Bailout!"

Hmmm...sorry, but I'm out of ideas.

Sounds like more of the same to me.
Please define "new conservatism"

He admires Reagan, but he recognizes that we are not in Reagan’s time

This proves that he doesn't get it. The values of Reagan are not bound by time but will always ring true. The notion that we have to change our core beliefs to attract more voters is hogwash. We need to find better ways to communicate our time tested message to more voters.

Talent, on loan, from God.

" ... Please define "new conservatism""

Off the top I would say Islam isn't our enemy, homosexuality is perfectly normal, and should be promoted, Christianity is bad, and should be avoided, illegal workers are our friends, and amnesty isn't the end of the world, tax and spend socialism is an idea that will work ... this time.

I could go on, but I need to go and hit the punching bag for a few minutes.

“This proves that he doesn’t get it. “
______________

I really don’t know much about Steele’s policies but I’m in South Carolina where Kate Dawson, our very conservative chair, was in the running. The papers today are describing Steele as a moderate who beat out more conservative Blackwell and Dawson. Seemingly Blackwell (also black) pulled out early and through his support to the less conservative Steele against more conservative Dawson so they are calling this racial politics.

I don’t know if Steele is really a moderate but Dawson is VERY conservative so Steele may be left of him but still pretty conservative.

Here's an encomium long on hortatory phrases but short on facts apart from the author's reference to Steele's campaign for the Senate in Maryland-which he lost.

I hope the author has not over exaggerated Mr. Steele's talents. He will need every skill imaginable if he is to save the Republican Party from oblivion. He must be able to persuade like Ronald Reagan, throw bombs like Newt Gingrich, and organize like Rahm Emanuel.

I hope our new chairman succeeds mightily and displays remarkable talents that the author has left Factually unrecounted among Mr. Steele's accomplishments.

We lost the White House by running a weak, old, ideologically incoherent candidate against the most politically skilled Democrat in ages.

When our rulers decide that it's time for CFR Team A to have its turn at the presidency, the order comes down to CFR Team B to select and run a loser, with orders to take a dive. National politics, as an old boss said, is like pro wrestling -- a fixed spectacular. A show to distract us from the increasing loss of liberty on the local level.

Time to cite Samuel Adams:

He should of explained why he was against the other candidates for RNC Chair and not just say that he was against them without any kind of detailed explanation. Exactly why was he against Ken and Saul? Many here on FR were for Ken Blackwell, including myself.

I hope this is not another “stupid Republican trip” again like when they imported Keyes to Illinois to run against Barry for the US Senate. THAT was a failed circus. I am giving Steele the benefit of the doubt and see how he does. If he is a “big picture” guy, and brings conservatism back to the party, I'm “in”, otherwise the Constitution Party is looking more attractive at least for local politics. Forgive me for I am in Illinois where Blago was simply the bushy-headed tip of a large, ominous bi-partisan iceberg known as The Combine. (I love mixed metaphors.)

It’s crossed my alleged mind more than once that the GOP ran Keyes in IL hoping that he would lose and then go away for ever.

I would not call “K street” Newt a real leader. Newts ideal of leadership is to keep throwing stuff at the wall and maybe something will stick. He is really liking in the follow through department, ask his wives.

Thank you both for your replies. Unfortunately, all of your suggestions are what I feared. Time to go find a new label for myself.
