Republicans Prepare to Launch Offensive Against Democrats

Declaring the party "off the mat" and in fighting shape, the leaders of the Republican National Committee yesterday vowed to keep pressure on Barack Obama and the Democrats and to revamp the party in order to regain territory lost in the past two election cycles.

At their first winter meeting as they settle into what could be a long stretch in the opposition, the voting members of the Republican National Committee pledged to hold President Barack Obama and the Democratic-led Congress to account, to rein in the expansion of the federal government – and to wait for the Democrats to foul up to the difficult job of governing during an economic downturn.

"Now is not the time for us to lick our political wounds, now is the time for us to inflict some political wounds on our opponents," party chairman Mike Duncan told members in a hotel ballroom in Washington, to vigorous applause.

Party members yesterday cheered the first party's first organised act of political opposition – the Republican congressional delegation's united vote on Wednesday against an $819bn fiscal stimulus package designed by the Democrats.

It now falls to the 168 voting party members to chart a new course for the party, both in terms of doctrine and operational practice like voter outreach and message. They begin today, when they choose from among Duncan and five state-level Republican leaders to head the national effort

This is the advantage of being in the minority.

I think the GOP backlash was more a result of fatigue than an idealogical shift.

Though America clearly has become more liberal, both demographically and philosophically.

About damn time.

I'd like to think this means the GOP will be well rested and in fighting condition, since they have taken the last 8 years off. I'm skeptical, but I'd like to see it happen.

Gee, thanks, Pubbies! It would have been nice if you had done this back in 2001.

Nice that we had to read this in a Brit newspaper. Maybe the Dems will have to include foreign newspapers in their Fairness Act.

The version posted on Real Clear Politics sounds more like the real RNC McLamist thinking:

It isnt the Dem party that bothers me , Its the RINO’s in our own party.

The RNC better make them get in line if they ever intend to become a power on the Hill.

12 years of squandered majority don’t leave me too optimistic. But, hey...go team.

"Now is not the time for us to lick our political wounds, now is the time for us to inflict some political wounds on our opponents,"

I wish they would spend more time formulating and promoting a conservative agenda instead of juvenile statements that sound like they came from a high school locker room. Taxpayers don't care what politicians get "wounded", they want some leadership and direction from those they elected. Obama sounded like he could lead regardless of his actual ability to do so. Republicans sounded like reactionaries or followers with no real vision of where they wanted to go.

Reagan talked about Americas greatness and strength...the shining city on a hill. Now our leaders talk about politically "wounding" their opponents. No wonder people are cynical. Republicans need to "clean house" and if they don't they will degenerate even farther as a viable alternative to democrats.

“Gag the RINOS and throw em out of the party...”

Will there still be a party left if they do it? Republican candidates should dare to run against RINOs in the next election.

Target 20 or 30 Dems in Republican districts for Ads explaining what a steaming pile of crap the “Stimulus” package is.

Their Rep is more afraid of Pelosi than their constituents!!

Or better yet in 2002 when Liberal Democrats decided it was a good idea to inject divisive politics into the mainstream and then spent the next several years dividing America as much as they humanly could. That would have been the best time to do it.
