DISTRICT CONTEST CONTINUES

By Staff Report

Steve Pappas subpoenas UCSB

Steve Pappas subpoenaed the University of California, Santa Barbara Jan. 22 for all its voter registration information from the fall 2008 election.

Since losing the 3rd District supervisor seat to Doreen Farr by 805 votes in the November election, Pappas has been questioning the validity of voter registration from the university and its neighboring student town of Isla Vista.

Pappas and his attorney, Jeffrey Lake, have recounted every vote in I.V., asked for all of the county’s records, and filed a petition to the California Supreme Court challenging over half the votes cast in I.V. and UCSB.

Pappas said he was not sure if all the registration drives on campus were sponsored by UCSB, but the subpoena should answer that question.

Campus Democrats, for example, sponsored at least one drive, but it may be an independent entity from the university. More groups may be subpoenaed for voter registration information if it is found that many groups separate from the school sponsored the drives, he said.

When groups host registration drives, Pappas said, they take responsibility for following the rules and processes to make sure the cards are filled out properly.

“That’s the rationale of getting these records from UCSB to see who exactly had the responsibility for these registration cards,” he said.

“Records from election office were subpoenaed, too,” he added, “that ties back to those 18 precincts. The whole process and whole contest focus on those18 precincts where this 11th hour registration took place and the resulting votes.”

The “11th hour” registration refers to the about 1,200 UCSB and I.V. registration cards turned in during the last weeks of the registration period, Pappas said. If drive leaders did indeed break, for instance, the three day rule, which mandates a registration card be turned in within three days, then he questions how any of the surge could have been authenticated.

“I don’t want bad votes period. So if I lose however many and (Farr) loses however many, so what, it’s clean.”

If it is not continued, the court date is currently set for Feb. 17. Pappas could actually win the supervisor seat by about 2,250 votes if the court finds in his favor.

“Something didn’t sit right and I’ve got to show the public what it is,” Pappas said. “And when the judge makes his decision, he makes his decision, and I’ll be done.”

Paul Desruisseaux, associate vice chancellor for UCSB, said that the university’s counsel is still determining how to go about responding to the subpoena.

“The staff is evaluating the subpoena. … I think within the next few days they will be releasing some information. That’s about where it stands,” he said in a phone interview.

This is a little known story playing out in the Santa Ynez Valley. Many people believe our 3rd District Supervisor election was stolen by the ACORN activities at the University of California at Santa Barbara. The precincts in dispute had over 100% voter turnout. Now the home of the Reagan Ranch is being governed by a bunch of pinko college kids.

Thanks for bringing this story to FR. Yes it is local, but if you multiply this kind of voter fraud throughout every precinct in the USA, it is enough to throw elections at every level.

Thanks for bringing this story to FR.

The pleasure be all mine. I have not felt this wired or inspired since 1992 when I went to work to get people elected who would stand up to the Clinton Steam Roller. President Bush was too hard to defend. The Democrats should have loved Bush. The only thing he did right was the WOT and the execution of that was flawed. I have always made a convincing case to support the USA by saying "Consider the alternative." We are now seeing what the alternative looks like and I am going down swinging my musket.
