Obama's 'Blue Wall' Locks in Democratic Gains

Led by President Obama, Democrats are leveraging the nation’s economic crisis and the aura of inaugural goodwill to build a “blue political wall” — new constituencies dependent on expanding government programs — that could lock in 2008 Democratic political gains for decades to come.

Unless Republicans act to counter those initiatives, pundits and pollsters warn, they could find themselves on an extended vacation from power in Washington.

The combination of former Rep. Rahm Emanuel, described by former Bush adviser Karl Rove as a “sharp-edged partisan,” and President Obama’s strategic mindset, could spell big trouble for Republicans hoping to return to the majority.

Shortly after being appointed Obama’s chief of staff, Emanuel declared at an executive forum: “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things you think that could not do before.”

The administration’s plan to take advantage of the financial meltdown centers around Democrats’ proposed $825 billion stimulus package, which the Wall Street Journal reports “has given Obama a unique opportunity granted almost none of his predecessors. Because of the economic crisis, he is meeting an unusual array of promises almost immediately, including heavy investments in energy and other priorities.”

Let’s wait at least one year before we start saying the rats can lock in anything. Things change, and conditions change. So far, this administration has done nothing other than look after terrorists, while jobs are being lost.

As far as I can recall in nearly 50 years of voting, Democrats sole legislative goal has been to to enhance their power.

This is a real possibility, a big government coalition running things in DC. Not that the last administration was anything great.

One hopes this isn’t so. I guess we’ll know for sure in 2011.

The main thing standing in Obama’s way is the very real possibility that higher taxation can not be politically sustainable. State & Local governments seem to be finding this out already.

We could be at an “Atlas Shrugged” kind of turning point where the producers in society just kinda shift it into neutral.

I suggest that everybody read the entire article. This is precisely the reason that the 2008 election was so important - this is not political business as usual.

This president and this congress have absolutley NO intention of governing from the center, and the article disabuses us of the notion that a bad Democrat administration will usher in a Republican wave a’ la ‘94. They ain’t gonna allow it to happen.

The perception of the majority of the American people that we are in crisis, coupled with the gutless Republicans in Congress will allow this administration to get away with virtually anything.

The are increasing their power base through welfare, immigration and the unions; it’s gonna be a long forty years in the desert for us.

I wouldn’t exactly say he’s done nothing. Take a look at the raft of executive orders he signs daily. These are not ‘resolutions’. Stem Cells, halting prosecutions of terrorist prisoners, revocation of bans against US funds for overseas abortion assistance, and a host of others.....he has a pen and he’s using it, don’t fool yourself

However, long term they are sowing the seeds of revolt. Communism doesn’t work. The people who are seduced into being dependent on the government will find themselves abandoned when that same government can’t even pay off its debts, let alone nursemaid them.

No, those government “make work” jobs are an open invitation to joining the Gulag.

There were people stupid enough to leave the U.S. during the “Great Depression” to go to Russia for a job. They wound up in the real Gulag.

Commies only destroy, they don’t have the capacity to build anything.

The “Blue Wall” is built of sand. There is no money with which to build it, no money to pay for all the payoffs to their special interest groups, unless the Democrats endlessly borrow. The nation is already bankrupt.

The Donkeycrats are completely delusional.

I'm not sure about this. Uncle Sam is broke, and the rest of the world's economies are crashing. He's going to have a hard time paying for these entitlements with no one to borrow from. The UAW bosses won't be much of a help after their stubbornness results in the elimination of their work force.

If the economy does not turn around soon, the GOP drought could fall well short of forty years.

Nothing in politics is what it started out to be. Just wait - in two years, my bet is Zero will have screwed up enough that even a democratic majority won’t be able to save his agenda. This guy isn’t God, and that will become quite apparent in time.

Ever-changing economic realities and unforseeable foreign crisis will shake Zero’s administration to the core. It’s hard to see that right now, but it will happen.

Count on it.

Some will argue that President Bush tried to lock in permanent gains with the security issue, but it did not work out so well. The same will happen with the Democrats. I am becoming more convinced that $1 trillion in stimulus will not work and the economic environment is collapsing.

In the end, the American people are going to be mad as hell when they wonder what happened to $1 trillion + tarp money & still no recovery. Somebody will have some “splaining” to do.
