Biden says American deaths in Afghanistan are likely to increase (Thanks, Joe)

Vice President Biden, in a somber assessment of the road ahead, predicted Sunday that American casualties will climb in Afghanistan as the Obama administration shifts military priorities in the battle against terrorism.

The war in that country will get bloodier, he said, as the U.S. sends in additional troops to take back territory now controlled by Taliban militants, who were weakened when American forces invaded following the 9/11 terrorist attacks but have regained strength in recent years.

"We've inherited a real mess," Biden said in an interview on CBS' Face the Nation, referring to decisions by the Bush administration and some U.S. allies that have allowed extremists to regain their footing and the drug trade to thrive. "We're about to go in and try to essentially reclaim territory that's been effectively lost. ... All of this means we're going to be engaging the enemy more now."

Asked if this would lead to more losses of U.S. soldiers, Biden said: "I hate to say it, but yes I think there will be. There will be an uptick."

Another prophecy from Guru Joe! Obama is going to be tested within 6 months and more troops are going to war. From the anti-war party, the Obama “give peace a chance”, let’s try diplomacy administration.

Why is he launching MORE military operations in Afghanistan if Osama bin Ladin is not there?

Does that not contradict his own promises and vows (not that anybody could keep track of his multiple promises regarding military actions or non actions)

There will be an uptick.

Might just be me reading into it, but that sounds condescending and dismissive of American lives.

Afghanistan is not the real war since the people that attacked us on 9/11 are in the tribal areas.

That’s just brilliant. Good thing he’s in charge.

>Taliban militants, who were weakened when American forces invaded

Oh please.

They got their asses handed to them on a platter.
The US kicked major ass, defeated them in open battle, and drove the survivors to scurry off and skulk in the tribal areas.

Now hussein and co want to move in major troop strength to really do very little at all.
Until Afghanistan can pull itself together - and I hope that it has been - another 50,000 troops will do what?

I'm a hawk, I know that there are remants of these human wastage scattered about the country, but the key here is Pakistan, and they are going to be a problem for a very long time, if not forever.
After all, it was the Pakistan military who essentially created the taliban.

Let's see: you send more troops into battle, you get more casualties but you win the battle. You pull troops out of battle, you have fewer casualties but you lose the battle.

That Joe, he's a real military genius.

Biden has a dangerous combination of lack of knowledge, lack of good sense and egomania. He will prove to be a major embarrassment for the US.

There is absolutely no geographical significance to Afghanistan. It is a dead-end country where Obama wants to waste our assets. Actually, it will pin our troops in, and will endanger them. This it what Biden was talking about, “in the first six months, we will be tested and it may not appear to be the right thing.”

This is the most least transparent, least ethical administration ever!

He’s 15 % down already so we’ll see. When he really pisses off the dino-media
like Nixon did, maybe we’ll see some action but º is good at smoke and mirrors.

Biden sounds like Al Gore on acid -- a walking doomsayer. Financial situation to get worse (before better), deaths to increase, some cataclysm or another that will require blind allegiance to his 0-ness...

These people are freaky. I'm sick of them already.

U.S. President Barack Obama signs an executive order on Executive Branch ethics as news photographers document it at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in the White House complex in Washington, January 21, 2009. REUTERS/Larry Downing (UNITED STATES)

Presidential Executive Order:
1. Torture is prohibited as defined in section 2340 of title 18, United States Code.
2. Murder, torture, cruel or inhuman treatment, mutilation or maiming, intentionally causing serious bodily injury, rape, sexual assault or abuse, taking of hostages, or performing of biological experiments is prohibited.
3. Other acts of violence serious enough to be considered comparable to murder, torture, mutilation, and cruel or inhuman treatment, as defined in section 2441(d) of title 18, United States Code are prohibited.
4. Any other acts of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment are prohibited.
5. We are prohibited from engaging in willful and outrageous acts of personal abuse done for the purpose of humiliating or degrading the individual in a manner so serious that any reasonable person, considering the circumstances, would deem the acts to be beyond the bounds of human decency, such as sexual or sexually indecent acts undertaken for the purpose of humiliation, forcing the individual to perform sexual acts or to pose sexually, threatening the individual with sexual mutilation, or using the individual as a human shield.
6. Acts intended to denigrate the religion, religious practices, or religious objects of the individual will not be tolerated.

Does that sound like a strong departure from the Bush Administration’s Interpretation of the Geneva Conventions Common Article 3 as Applied to a Program of Detention and Interrogation Operated by the Central Intelligence Agency?

It’s not. It IS the Bush Administration’s 2007 Executive Order 13440.
