"....no way I’d go to Mardi Gras these days."

Yup. They use Mardi Gras like bait.

We went to NO the weekend before Mardi Gras a few years ago. It was interesting to watch the pick pockets sweep through the crowd.

I can’t find any specific stats for NOLA. All I can find is the FBI stats for the whole country.

I go to Mardi Gras parades all the time. We just had one today that went by the end of my street. Of course I haven't been to a parade in New Orleans in a few years. I like the local ones better, less people and the crowds are nicer.

I watched a Police LT. bust a pick pocket after a parade. He was a little guy and he tried to pass himself off as an 11 year old. The cop told him that he knew he was little and all but there was no way he was 11. When the cop started going through the guys pockets he found all kinds of drivers license's and credit cards. I walked away at that point smiling, my kids were intrigued by the whole thing.

Ditto. There was one near here on Dauphin Island Saturday but I didn't go.

Thanks for posting those stats. It would be interesting to see what the stats look like a little further to the west say out around the airport, etc. I wonder how the combined stats would look and would guess the trend would remain close to the same as for Orleans.

Things I've learned on the parade route:

Never stand behind a tall guy on the parade route, you won't catch anything.

If you stand near a good looking chick you won't get thrown anything.

If your friends or neighbors have a young child borrow it. People on the floats like to bury little kids in stuff.

Old people in lawn chairs and wheel chairs are also targets. If you stand near them you'll get lots of stuff; old people don't move fast enough to grab it off the ground. If it's out of their reach they don't bother.

I live on the North Shore and our crime stats dropped 16 percent in one year. This is great as we have had a lot of Orleans types resettle here. The local P.D. does a fine job keeping them in line. If they try to hang out in the street like they do in Orleans the local P.D. will be there in minutes to warn them, run them off and ticket them if they act cocky.

“The environment of crime and murder in New Orleans is the product of the city’s black residents, many of whom have lived in New Orleans for generations. Illegals have little to do with it.”

They do now. A woman my wife went to school with in New Orleans was raped and murdered by an illegal from Mexico.

We watched a group of about four or five people, some jostling the crowd and some picking pockets. After they were gone people started missing their wallets.

...likewise when I lived there....we’d go out to Metarie...never went to a big parade in the Quarter....too wild to take small children.

NOLA murders in broad daylight is nothing new. There must be another reason why they are trying to make it look like a new development.

Ahhhh shoot. I’ve been feeling so sentimental lately and there you went and had to mention Dauphin Island AND mardi gras! I am 51 years old and a lot of my best childhood memories are of summers spent at Dauphin Island. Like it was yesterday, I can still smell the gulf ;) Those were the days! But one of my earliest memories was of a Mardi Gras parade. Doubt it was in NO, I don’t know, but we lived in Mobile, so it might have been somewhere in Alabama. Great fun!!

That (nationwide data) would be fine (or just the url of the FBI site with the stats. I don’t live in NO.
