Henry Stevenson has had enough of jail. After the 40-year-old Plainfield resident served time for burglary and resisting arrest, Stevenson said he wanted to set an example for his children so they could avoid the same fate.
That's why Stevenson and a dozen men, some parolees and ex-inmates, were outside in the cold afternoon today voluntarily raking up debris around the Bethany Baptist Church in Newark on West Market Street. With garbage bags and brooms, they gathered up dead plants, autumn leaves, and trash, making this corner of Newark a little cleaner.
"It's time to make a change," said Stevenson as he paused with a broom in his hand.
The clean-up yesterday at the church was part of a community service day sponsored by the state parole board and community groups to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Obama. About 150 people, many of whom are transitioning out of jail, showed up at the church to hear words of encouragement, pray and volunteer.

And those of us that ‘don’t volunteer’ will win all-expense paid vacations to Amerikan Terezienstadt!
I guess I’m wondering why they didn’t do this before? So, by someone calling it a “change” in their behavior, the media calls it news? oy .. so this will be the new scramble for the media, eh?
Why didn’t they have pride before Obambi stepped into it.
FDR hadn’t accomplished much when he was elected. His greatest accomplishment was his struggle against paralysis, and this was kept more or less secret.
When he took power, Hitler hadn’t held office or accomplished anything other than being a successful community organizer.
As long as they put their Obama-worship to good use, I’m not going to complain, regardless of how undeserved it is.
Ol Adolf was a work in progress too. Same as 0
