Here is how to be a third party mediator in this conflict: The first condition to opening any talks at all— at all— would be that all parties acknowledge that Israel exists and will continue to have a right to exist within defensible borders. This is not to be “negotiated”; it is a pre-condition. Israel is Israel. Israel is not "Occupied Territories".
Of course, talks end there, but you say “Get back to us when this condition is met.” If they never do— fine. In the meantime, Israel would be free to defend itself and should be quietly encouraged to do so with, shall we say, a little more vigor.
There is no question in my mind that this formula presents the only realistic path to a permanent peace. All the ‘negotiations’ over the past 30-40 years have made things much worse.
Poor Israel has to deal with this everytime we get a new liberal in office. THEY are the ones who have to suffer the lessons for our stupid POTUS.
