Howard County, Maryland to Consider Attack on Hunting Tomorrow!

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Please Stand-Up and Make Your Voices Heard!

The Howard County Council will be meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, January 21 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss new hunting regulations that will effectively ban all firearm and muzzleloader hunting within Howard County.

The measure would double to 300 yards the minimum distance for shooting near a building. The minimum remains 150 yards for those at least 10 feet off the ground in a stand and shooting downward.  The state statutory minimum for all hunting is 150 yards.  In addition, shooting within 100 yards of a public road is prohibited.  These two provisions together will prohibit many forms of hunting on thousands of acres of traditional hunting lands throughout the county.

Incredibly, the measure would also make it unlawful for a hunter to shoot in the direction of a building or camp if the distance to the building or camp is within the “maximum range” of the firearm or muzzleloader (arguably up to two miles for standard hunting loads depending on who’s doing the math).  This radical and subjective provision will ban virtually all firearms and muzzleloader hunting within the county.  If a provision like this were in effect nationwide, hunting would be restricted to only the most remote locations in America.

This proposal is an unfortunate knee-jerk reaction to an isolated incident that occurred in the county.  The fact is that hunting remains one of the safest forms of recreation in the country according to the National Safety Council.

Tomorrow’s meeting will be held in the Howard County Board of Education Building's Board Room located at 10910 Route 108 in Ellicot City to discuss new hunting regulations within the county.

It is important to attend and make your voice heard and defend the rich hunting heritage of Maryland.  If you are unable to attend, please call the County Council at (410) 313-2001 or your Council Members.  Contact information can be found below.

Why not? Enough VA gun owners voted for Obama for him to win the state. Screw ‘em.

They just had a hunter shoot 3X at a deer with a shotgun and miss all three times in Columbia, MD. He was using slugs and must have been shooting uphill or whatever, but one of his slugs travelled 275 yards and just barely made it thru a good size plate glass window at a school and fell within a foot.

He’s in a little trouble, hearing pending I think the penalties are $1500 fine, up to five year loss of hunting privileges and that’s all I remember.

He could use the five years off to improve his markmanship.

This is the result of his mistake. Sadly, eastern MD is overrun with deer and it’s near impossible to even get a shot at some of them. There is a special hunt with sharpshooters sometime this week in the Loch Raven watershed (Baltimore County) to try to thin the herd. I used to drive thru that area and you really have to be careful to avoid them.

Wanna know why there’s so many deer at Loch Raven?

That’s where the “wildlife rehabilitators” take them to when they release them.

I know this from personal experience.

The rehabilitators must be stroking out, right now.

For awhile golf courses in the Loch Raven area were hiring bow and arrow hunters to thin the deer herds ravishing the locale. Of course after being shot with an arrow the deer can still take off leafing fences several times and end up in someone’s back yard. The hunters would give chase in cars, locate the deer in someone’s back yard and then would proceed to dispatch the deer and remove it. People would come home from work to find a bloody mess.

I should have included the golf courses moved from hunters with rigles because the locals did not like guns. They liked finding dead deer in their back yard even less.

I guess they could always call the rehabbers who would just fix them up and put them back again....:)
