It is the curse of the journalist always to be present, but never really There.
The job requires that we stand slightly apart, seeing but not believing; hearing without being seduced. We jot down the words, careful not to let them get under our skin. Like surgeons in the operating room, we can't afford to become emotionally involved lest we notice the blood and let the scalpel slip.
Then comes the rare instance that penetrates the armor, when something causes you to put down the pad, turn off the camera in your head, and become part of the moment. The short list in recent history includes the assassinations of John and Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., the signal marches on Washington, the terrorist attacks of 9/11. To those we may now add Inauguration Day 2009....

The lead dog on the Vichy Republican team drools at the mere presence of Obamao.
Peggy Noonan probably needed some alone time as well.
Imagine how much greater the nation would be if Sarah Palin was being inaugurated.
No more Kathleen Parker posts without BARF ALERTS!
And to think, I used to actually pay attention to what she wrote.
If Kathleen Parker was consistent, this would be a column about how vacuous Obama’s speech was and how he should be immediately dumped and replaced with Mitt Romney.
“No more Kathleen Parker posts without BARF ALERTS!”
OMGoodness! That woman is out of her mind with glee!
Oh for cripes sake spare us the “detached, clinical professional” rubric. “Journalists” today are less observers than manufacturers.
One thing is for sure, it’s all about them.
I'd tell her to go hump Obama's leg, but there is a long line for that already. Maybe Krauthammer or Bill Kristol will let her cut in.
“And I for one, welcome our new Democratic overlords.”
Just to make it worthwhile for anyone who clicked on the thread by accident ...
Parker hasn’t changed a bit. She will publish emails of those who hold her task on the comment section of the blog. She was one of the journalist ‘crying’ last fall about getting “hate” mail in response to some of her garbage. Everyone be careful. She will quote bloggers out of context to suit her ego. She is worse than Dowd, even though Parker is a so-called ‘conservative.’
That’s a gorgeous car, TC.
Notice the Parker writes about putting down the pen and letting down the armor and in that gives herself away. What I want to know is: What event would cause her and other journalists that are in love with themselves to put down their mirrors? As far as I can tell, she is still posing for herself in the mirror even as she squeezes out her latest drivel.
I agree. Put Tom Selleck behind the wheel, and everything is perfect ;-).
Beside her lifesize cardboard Barack Obama. It's pathetic, really.
I second that emphatically!
