His actions, especially his treatment of his gay daughter Mary, helped define him as the most pro-gay vice president in American history. In her book, Now Its My Turn, Mary recounts how her father reacted when she first came out to him: The first words out of his mouth were exactly the ones I wanted to hear: Youre my daughter and I love you and I just want you to be happy.
Later, he would welcome Marys partner Heather into their family. They sat together at President Bushs first inauguration in 2001, his second in 2005, and even today at President Obamas swearing-in. Heather joined Mary on the stage with the families of the president and vice president when Bush declared victory in 2004. The two women sat together at the White House dinner for Britains Prince Charles and his wife Camilla....

Whoever said Dick Cheney was right about every single issue out there? we all know this, and as a parent he can say what he said. Notice he didn’t say it was totally fine with him and being gay is just super. I don’t think he thinks it’s great.
But no offense I have never looked to Dick Cheney as the be-all end-all for the conservative viewpoint on homosexual perverts.
All this reminds me of is John Kerry and that ridiculous Silky Pony John Edwards trying to use the former Vice President’s daughter in a craven manner that made EVERYBODY think ‘awwww no, they didn’t just do that, did they?”
I’m not quite sure what Mr. Cheney was supposed to do. Disown her? Castigate her publicly?
Apparently, he thinks anyone can enter any personal relationship they like. He didn’t say it isn’t a sin.
As for homosexual “marriage,” he said it should be up to the states. I oppose homosexual “marriage” strongly, but I don’t think his viewpoint is particularly heinous.
RUBBISH. Cheney’s homo daughter issue never entered his work life. This is misrepresentation.
“Accept the things you cannot change”...comes to mind.
It’s not true that Dick Cheney and President Bush never discussed the gay marriage situation. Dick Cheney (and I agree with him) thinks gay marriage should be left up to the states. I am pretty sure he discussed this with President Bush. President Bush, when informed that Mary Cheney had given birth to a boy, said that Mary will be a loving soul to her son.
I would hope that I too had the love and strength of character that Dick showed to his daughter, should the same ever be placed on me.
Love for family must come before all else in cases like this
Sam Cheney’64!
What has that do do with the office of the vice president? It didn’t enter his work life, hence the title is misleading. I don’t wish to know in what cabin the author keeps his logs.
Cheney was afflicted with a homo daughter because he was a workaholic, who spent too much time away from his family, IMO.
Reminds me of the James boys. Their father was a preacher, bringing coal miners to the Lord. But insodoing he neglected his own family. You must always make time for the family.
This is incredible. All it takes to be “pro” gay, is for one to have a child who decides to be Gay, and be accepting of it.
...succeeded by the most GAY vice president in history!
“Im not quite sure what Mr. Cheney was supposed to do. Disown her? Castigate her publicly?”
That is exactly what some of the truest of true conservatives would want.
Alan Keyes did, for instance. He’s a true conservative, and he holds a firm line against homosexuality in his family and his country.
And Ambassador Keyes always speaks up.
The question: Are we to be a (conservative) movement of Dick Cheneys or a movement of Alan Keyes?
Join forces with other true conservatives, who would restart the conservative movement by castigating our family members, like Keyes.
bump
I'm sticking with Cheney.

Hmmm. This sounds really intelligent. So what about the people who have gay sons and daughters who are not workaholics?
“Castigate her publicly?
OK, a “a true conservative” doesn’t shrink from exercising a moral judgment. But first and foremost, a conservative values privacy, staying out of other peoples faces, and wanting other people to stay out of his own face. The idea that “the public” has a right to expect someone to publicly castigate a family member over a private matter sounds to me like a liberal attitude.
