All of these beliefs make people more suceptible to not take the necessary precautions such as thorough washing. But because the nematode/worm is so small, even a very well-washed veggie may remain contaminated.

According to a previous article, the two people hospitalized in late December used a peroxide wash on the infested peppers that they ate. The wash didn't penetrate the cracks, creases, and crevices the culprits were in.

This is, as you say, tropical, and endemic to this part of Hawaii.

OTOH, almost all other areas, even mainland US have their own little known nasties that "normal farming practices" and "safe food preparation. storage practices" keep in check, or even effectively eradicate from the food supply; ..."tricky noses", trichinae worms in pork, comes rapidly to mind...but still waiting isolated disease vector reservoirs to make a comeback into human hosts given, half a chance.

Speaking of which, for the FReeper hunters (me included) on here, there is this:

Freezing wild game meats, unlike freezing pork products, even for long periods of time, may not effectively kill all (trichinae) worms. This is because the species of trichinella that typically infects wild game is more resistant to freezing than the species that infects pigs.

Forgive me, but I really hate these activist anti-GM folks. If you don't like GM, try not to consume GM products. In fact, try not to consume anything at all ... that will keep you safe and make you much less of a pain in the butt to others.

It also strikes me that people that eat raw foods without washing them are posing a greater risk to themselves than they ever imagined. I don't eat food from my garden that hasn't been washed ... even to the point that I won't pull a cherry tomato and pop it in my mouth when I walk by. Of course, that is mostly because I use lots of pesticide, but the reason doesn't seem to be as important as the practice of washing the food.

I can’t stomach (pardon the pun) environmentalist elitist and the organic only crowd as well. I find them to be self righteous, muppies (mountain yuppies), human hating, America is evil, Mother Earth loving people.

I do not object to labeling that indicates whether produce has been GM. We prefer our foods in its natural state, so to speak, the way God intended. We also use some organic’s. There is a difference in the way the food tastes compared to industrialized, mass produced, government produce. We also use organic cleaners, and are happy with them.

I do not believe all the hype surrounding the corporately produced foods. I’m sure part of the motivating factor is founded in liberal ideology.

I wouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

The same chemicals used to fertilize “organic” plants are the same that are used on deadly “non-organic” crops.

Nitrogen. It is in our atmosphere, and the Earth. Plants must have it to survive. Somehow, concentrated forms of it that are engineered, slowly release and feed plants in a much more efficient way, greatly increasing production and feed far more people than do “organic” forms.

the only difference is, the “non-organic” version can be engineered to give the crop the exact nutrients that the local soil conditions lack. And also be free of other biological hazards like the one mentioned here.

Other than that, there are no other hazards from “non-organic” food crops, especially the fear of “chemical” health risks. The herbicides and pesticides used today are neutralized by contact with soil, water and sunlight. And, the proof is, more people are living longer than ever in spite of the fact that more food is produced this way than ever before.

I have always believed that the reason why organic produce costs more than non organic produce is that you have to pay for the extra rat feces and insect fragments.

Why, the one Paul Ehrlichman predicted lo those many years ago, and before him, Malthus. Course, having grown up in an area of the country where they had to look high and low to find 100k persons in a 100-square mile diameter circle, I had a hard time swallowing that. But that’s what THEY said, so it must be.;o)

Rat lungworm can be contracted by anyone who eats raw produce from the big isla d whether or not it is genetically modified or organic. The slug which carries the disease is present on at least four of hawaii’s islands. Raw produce includes greens and herbs you may grow in your yard. Spraying them with pesticide is no guarantee against slugs depositing their larvae. At least one of three people now in a coma did not attend the raw food festival. I have no idea about the other two.
