Close Authorities are searching for a snowmobiler who ran over and killed 57 mallard ducks Tuesday on a river in Fond du Lac, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

The ducks were found in an area of open water and on the ice of the Fond du Lac River near Lake Winnebago, said George Protogere, a DNR warden supervisor.

The snowmobiler apparently skipped over the open water, turned around and skipped over the water again, Protogere said.

The fact that the snowmobiler appears to have intentionally run over the ducks is disturbing, Protogere said.

"You think about wildlife and the journey that they have when they migrate and the ones that stick around with these harsh temperatures, and then all of the sudden they get killed by a senseless act," he said. "It just does not make any sense."

The ducks - 37 drake mallards and 20 mallard hens - were killed sometime between about 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday, Protogere said.

The duck slaughter comes less than a week after snowmobilers ran down and killed four deer and fatally injured a fifth Friday night in Waupaca County. No arrests have been made in connection with that case, authorities said.

After last weeks

Snowmobilers round up and run over deer

, I think we have to be concerned about the effects of global cooling. Hope they find these guys too, and have a warm jail cell waiting.

I will never understand this cruelty...It makes me sick...just run them down...It’s one thing to hunt and eat what you kill. It’s quite another to kill for no good reason. I hope they hang these morons.

The snowmobiler skipped over open water?

That’s news to me. I’ve never heard of a snowmobile being able to ride across water. How in the world do you pull that off?

Exactly. At least the Native American tribes respected the animal that they hunted for food. Killing just to kill is psychotic.

WTH is going on around here these days?

I suppose this is just the ‘Winter version’ of the usual poaching that happens the rest of the year; the fact that they’re using sleds to accomplish mayhem instead of baseball bats or poisoning the neighbors cat or whatever, makes it a “story.” *Rolleyes*

No sympathy from this quarter. People that harm children in any way or kill/maim animals for fun (versus for food, in season) are sick.

Cruelty to animals is frequently a precursor to cruelty to humans. This jerk is a sociopath.

I believe there's much truth in that. My wife founded and ran an animal rescue organization for years, and you just wouldn't believe the things some humans are capable of doing as casually as you or I would cross the street.

I can understand killing a person....we are quite indifferent when it comes to our own species....but killing puppies, deer, and ducks is not cool........

Cruelty has no boundaries. In a related story today, some fella in Laguna Beach, California, beat a beautiful Heermann's gull to death because it tried to swipe his wife's ice cream cone. Broke its wing and they had to put it down.

Worse still, the people around him did nothing as he beat this bird to death.

Different outcome had I been there...

Somthing fishy here.

57 ducks don't just sit around while somebody runs them over with a frickin snowmobile.

Hit the gap at high speed. Sometimes you pull it off, sometimes you don't.
