Commentary: Bush can't see failure of Katrina response ("No Bias, No Bull" full of Bull)
cnn ^ | 1/13/2009 | Campbell Brown

The story Much of President Bush's news conference today was a defense of the many controversial decisions of his presidency, it was also reflective, with the president showing a willingness to admit and talk about the serious mistakes made by this administration.

But on one topic in particular, he seemed almost entirely disconnected from what really happened: Hurricane Katrina. As someone who spent many days in New Orleans, Louisiana, after Hurricane Katrina, I was taken aback listening to the president talk about the government's response.

CNN wanted Bush to suspend Habeas Corpus, declare Martial Law and name himself the tyrant of New Orleans.

A General by the name of Andrew Jackson tried that in New Orleans and was fined for jailing a judge who said Martial law in this case was unconstitutional.

Hey CNN, do a google search or use an encyclopedia, search for local governments, mayor, Governor, emergency contingency plan for New Orleans, the United States Constitution, division of powers, and the 10th Amendment. Until then quit displaying your ignorance.

Lunatics who live below sea level, who build in hurricane-prone areas, who have been flooded out before, and who know that they will be hit again, and choose to live a dirty, crime-ridden city of drugs, alcohol and debauchery deserve whatever they get. God tried to clean it up but these morons are like cockroaches. Even God can’t eliminate ‘em!

I live outside Biloxi, MS and was here during Katrina. This story is pure bull.

Unlike LA, we had a Governor and local politicians who had their stuff together and kicked off operations with due speed. Water, food, and other life-support supplies started before most folks had to go thirsty or hungry for even a short while. I was amazed at how fast everything came together and at how accessible necessities were. Of course, there were lines, but it was a huge operation and the coordination was awesome. We got a little short on gas for our vehicles, but we had topped them off prior to the storm and I never had to wait in one of the long lines to try to get a few gallons because even gas came into the are fast enough to take care of those that had planned ahead and who didn't drive for the sake of driving.

We mostly saw National Guard and police/emergency services from other states, but it was obvious that there was a huge amount of planning/coordination at higher levels to get them the supplies they were getting to us.

Those that complain that President Bush didn't do enough, fast enough, are the same folks that think the Feds should rule our everyday lives.

MS also didn't try to take our guns away. I was at the end of my street, with my .357 strapped on, putting up a sign at the end of my street notifying any would-be looters that they would be shot, when a Florida Trooper came cruising up. He smiled and gave me a thumbs-up and said we were making his job easier by being able to take care of ourselves.

I am sorry he is even making excuses for Katrina. The state was offered help, and declined. I was raised in Texas; we had a tornado, we dealt with it.

I really wish people in this country would learn the difference between having a FEDERAL government and a NATIONAL government. We have the former, which means that there are a lot of things that are not the President’s job. Responding to Katrina was one of those things. Unbelievable. Through endless welfare and overreaching congressional legislation, we have essentially neutered state governments. I could blame the 16th and 17th amendments for this, but then most people have no idea what those even are, much less how they were a bad idea.

Frankly, I’m suffering from post-Katrina Stress Disorder (PKSD). I’m fed up with the whining, the blame game, the non-stop Bush bashing. Bush did EVERYTHING in his power to try to prevent the chaos that occurred in Nawlins, only to be thwarted by the ineptness of Gov. Blanco and Mayor Ray Nagin.

I lived in Orlando in 2004 and we got hit with 3 major hurricanes in 6 weeks. Even though central FL hadn’t been hit by a hurricane for over 20 years before 2004, everyone knew what to do and we did it. Nawlins knows they are a hurricane target and did nothing to help themselves.

There is an old joke about a guy who goes to heaven after drowning in a flood. When he arrives at the Pearly Gates, God is there to meet him personally and asked him what happened. The man replied that when the National Guard came by to rescue him in their truck, he declined, saying “The Lord will save me.”

Later, when firefighters in a boat came by to rescue him in a boat, he declined, saying “The Lord will save me.” Finally, when the National Guard came back and tried to rescue him with their helicopter, he declined, saying “The Lord will save me.” “So”, the man asked God, “what happened, why didn’t you save me?”

“What did you want me to do?”, God replied, “I sent you a truck, a boat and a helicopter!”

Bush made every possible effort under the law to send aid to Lousyana and their inept state leaders thwarted all of his efforts. It’s time for Nawlins and their welfare mentality to grow up and accept the fact that, ultimately, THEY are responsible for themselves. Had they all drowned, it would have been a tragic loss - but one they could have prevented by taking responsibility for themselves.

The irony about Katrina is that the same people who accuse Bush/Cheney of blowing up the levees that failed after Katrina and blame FEMA for not getting there fast enough, want the same government to be responsible for their health care.

Idiots are doomed to remain idiots forever with that kind of “thinking”.

As some one who watched Hurricane Katrina unfold from the comfort of a large overstuffed chair at my favorite cigar store let me say I am taken aback that you are taken aback.

You, and your liberal media cohorts, have endlessly tried to pin the tail of this disaster on Bush. But those of us who followed the story know it’s the many Donkey’s, not the lone Elephant in the story, who are in need of that tail.

It was the Governors job to order the evacuation. It was the Governor’s job to mobilize the National Guard ahead of time. (The POTUS only calls up the guard to deploy them abroad.) Why didn’t she.

And it was most assuredly the Mayors job to maintain order. Instead we saw his police force looting Wal-Mart on TV, and of course we saw this horrible photo of the school busses drowned in a parking lot, when the city’s own evacuation plan called for using them to evacuate those without private transportation.

And finally we say the Donkey-voting residents of the city descend into an orgy of stupidity, stealing beer while there were fellow citizens needing the help nearby. Was Bush supposed to fix this too? Is he no responsible for black ghetto culture, as well as his other duties?

I think not. No, what we have here is a clear case, once again, of Bush refusing to be the chew-toy that you in the media insist he should be.

By the way, Campbell, you naming your show “No Bull”, is that self parody intentional, or are you really clueless? It’s this completely biased reporting that makes us laugh at CNN as a serious, balanced news source out here in flyover country, hon.

It’s like the TV Conversion: I saw one of a bazillion ads six months ago, got my coupons, got my converters, and have been loving hi-res for five months. Every day I am beaten over the head with warnings about the change, on commercials, on national PSA’s...my local TV Newsteam is going to do a “Warning Test” this Friday. And yet, I guarentee you that in February, if it goes down as planned, some people in my city will go “What happened to the TV!?” (And probably blame Bush, if the truth be known!)

They were never told to evacuate, that is the problem.

Another thing never mentioned is how billions of dollars were sent by the feds into New Orleans for the purpose of maintaining the levy system that would be the bulwark of defense against exactly what happened.

New Orleans did not receive the brunt of Katrina. The main force of the storm, both winds and storm surge, affected coastal areas of Mississippi from Biloxi eastward to Pascagoula. I was in both the New Orleans area and coastal Mississippi in the days immediately following the storm. There was simply no comparison of the damage the storm had done in those areas.

it just pisses me off that Bush can not step up and tell the press what the real problem with Katrina was. It was the local and State governments along with the people of New Orleans not evacuating or preparing for the storm.

I do blame Dubya for not nipping this BS in the bud-when the knives came out from the MSM and the other idiots, he should have put the smack down then and there-went on the offensive—gone on national TV and called out the inept Governor, Mayor, as well as the cretins who looted, made the Superdome a hellhole, shot at rescue helicopters, etc. showing pictures of the looting, the submerged buses, the CARS—there were many cars left in the “poor” areas, (in fact, it was later determined that there were so many cars still in NO after the flood that it posed an environmental hazard from the fluids leaking, etc.)showing many of those folks could have left beforehand.

Instead, he just let the perception be shaped by his enemies-when I saw the footage of Bush first meeting with Schoolbus Nagin, and Nagin’s body language, doing his pimp stroll behind Dubya, I knew that the fix was in, and I blame Bush for not flipping the script and fighting back.

Has CNN or any news organization ever asked Governor Blanco why, with a CAT 5 hurricane bearing down on New Orleans, she refused to activate the Southeast Louisiana Evacuation Plan????

Even after President Bush called and urged her to do so???

‘Bush deserves blame for a lot of things. Katrina is NOT one of them.’

Ditto.

People cannot be saved from themselves. They decided to stay. Their local government did not force/help them to go. They chose to live below sea level.
