Screen Actors' Guild Delays Strike Vote
The Los Angeles Times ^ | December 23, 2008 | Richard Verrier

Rocked by growing internal dissent that is splintering Hollywood's largest union, the Screen Actors Guild has postponed plans for a controversial strike authorization vote until after the union's national board meets to discuss the matter.

The union's 120,000 members were poised to vote on the planned strike referendum next month, with ballots going out Jan. 2.

But in an e-mail to the union's board members Monday night, SAG Executive Director Doug Allen said he and SAG President Alan Rosenberg agreed to push back the strike referendum until after the board convenes a special meeting Jan. 12 to "address the unfortunate division and restore consensus."

"This division does not help our effort to get an agreement from the [studios] that our members will ratify," Allen wrote. "This will provide us with more time to conduct member education and outreach on the referendum before the balloting."

From what I understand, the busboys and bartenders with SAG cards want to strike because it will cost them nothing except for a chance to work on set for a day saying "Hey, you!" in one scene. The full time actors don't want to strike because they saw the writers strike did nothing but cost everyone a lot of money.

Let them strike. Does anyone really care?

Both sides are going to lose here. The Writer’s strike only accelerated the evacuation of Hollywood. The new globalizing film industry no longer depends on one town.

This does beg the question.

Why was it okay for the WGA to shut down a whole industry just to make a few extra bucks, but not okay for Enron to shut off a few power plants just to make a few extra bucks?

As an entertainment lawyer who knows more than a few “busboys and bartenders with SAG cards” I can tell you that the last thing they want is a strike. Many of those busboys and bartenders, by the way, are much better actors than the actors whose names we all know.

I cannot carry a tune if you paid me. Never have been able to. With all of the technology now; I would sound like an angel.

I hope to heaven that they strike. It would, I believe, only hasten the demise of the crapfest that is Hollywood. Certainly, I have sympathy for all of the “normal” people that rely on ancillary revenue generated from the entertainment business. But, given the anti-American, anti-family, anti-capitalism etc, etc, etc junk that LA puts out out every year, another 6-9 month respite is just what the doctor ordered.

Good riddance.

Because only capitalists can exploit people. Don’t ask me why. Marx said so.
