To bail out the auto industry; 1) no sales tax on the purchase of new cars for two years 2) strip away or modify so called clean air standards (ie forcing ethanyl on us) 3) stop making the purchase of a new car such a horrible experience with wheeler dealer salesman 4) get the gov’t out of the way 5) ween labor away from exhorbitant contracts.

Craig tried desperately to get there to Vote, but his foot got stuck under the bathroom stall in the rush!

Two wrongs do not make a right. I read an assessment of the US automakers that said it will cost 200 BILLION to get them up re-tooled and back on the road to viability, so the $14 they are asking for now is a drop in the bucket. This country is BROKE! Throwing good money after bad is not a strategy. Wake up!

What about regulations, taxes and government interference

Aforementioned affects every manufacturer equally in the US.
You are trying to defend the indefensible.

The Rats are, of course, blaming the republicans for the failture of this bill. However, the bill would have reached 60 votes if 4 Rat No votes were switched and the 4 Nonvoting Rats voted Yes. The four Non-Voting Rats: Obama, Biden, Kerry and Kennedy. So they only have themselves to blame.

Exactly. That's why manufacturing has been dying for the last ten years or so. Auto is catching up due to the fact that they had it their way for years.

Yes. Unions may have been necessary at one time, but that time is long over. Unions are ruining our economy and American manufacturing.

Hugely. A decent man for a pol.
Now we have Salazar and Udall - the Bobsey twins.
Hopefully we will get rid of Ritter in 2y and keep the state from going down the toilet completely
I have lived in CO for 42 years, and for the first time in my adult life I am ashamed of my state

Native here, and I couldn't agree more.

Republicans Yes - - Bond, Mo.; Brownback, Kan.; Collins, Maine; Dole, N.C.; Domenici, N.M.; Lugar, Ind.; Snowe, Maine; Specter, Pa.; Voinovich, Ohio; Warner, Va.

Worth noting again, who our enemies are.

“Worth noting again, who our enemies are.”

Yep, I’m from Indiana and Lugar is going to get a note from me. I’ve voted for him the last time.

UAW should have voted for Ross Perot(giant sucking sound)in 92 instead of their god Clinton...stop blaming Republicans for their stupidity in being loyal to the demo-rat brand...as they're the ones who sold them to the lowest bidder.

Asking for a $2 raise in pay and benefits when GM or Big3 announce a $1 profit didn't help matters either.

Now you get a taste of what us aerospace workers felt back in 92 when god clinton cut defense contracts to the the bone.

Clinton, Aerospace Workers, Bone....should be in the Thesaurus

Exactly, this mess should have never started. The market should have figured it out. Yes, it would have been hard for a while, but the end play is much better than the end play we are going to have.

We shouldn’t have gotten into the socialisation of losses from the begining. Nice to know an illegal (Fed Res) entitity is still good at doing what every central bank in the course of history has done, inflate, steal wealth, and redistribute it upwards!

“Why does everyone put the full onus on the labor?”

I certainly don't. GM has been mismanaged for 30+ years. That's why I want GM to declare bankruptcy via Chapter 11, and be forced by creditors to reorganize with a new management team (and new labor contracts) in place. Why the President wants to throw $20b in TARP money at the same bungling fools who drove GM into the ditch is beyond my comprehension.

“... manufacturing has been dying for the last ten years or so.”

This is another myth that needs to be deflated. It is true that manufacturing employment had been declining (because of large productivity gains), but manufacturing output increased every year beginning in 2001 and continuing through 2007.

Oh, please. Don't be absurd. Show me raw stats not "adjusted" stats.

-- under the rules of the Senate, if the leader votes against the bill, he can bring it up again. --

House rules are similar, and the technique technically isn't limited to the leader. Anybody on the side that "won" the vote can move to reconsider the vote. Buyer's remorse, if you will. In this case, it was the "Nos" that won, because there would have to have been 60 affirmative votes to agree to limit debate on taking the bill up.

Technically, the vote is now under the motion to reconsider, and isn't final.

Anytime there is a vote in the House and Senate, listen for a short exchange immediately after the vote. "Move to table the motion to reconsider. Seconded. The motion to reconsider is tabled." This is done because "motion to reconsider" MUST be disposed of, or it can be raised by any member on the winning side, as long as it's made within about a 2 day window of any vote.

He's also been on the "immigration amnesty" side of the immigration issues.
