Nanny star Fran Drescher wants Hillary Clinton's senate seat
Herald Sun ^ | 10 December 2008 | Lucy Bennett

ACTRESS Fran Drescher, star of The Nanny, has thrown her hat in the ring to contest the US senate seat being left vacant by Hillary Clinton.

"Fran Drescher, actress, women's health advocate and public diplomacy envoy for the US State Department, announced that she is throwing her hat into the ring of contenders for the senate seat being vacated by Secretary of State-designate Hillary Rodham Clinton," Drescher spokesman Jordan Brown said.

Drescher, 51, is best known for her starring role in the 1990s TV comedy The Nanny, but since her diagnosis with uterine cancer, she has become a women's health advocate.

She was named a state department public envoy in September and recently toured eastern European countries to raise awareness of women's health issues.

It will be up to New York Governor David Paterson to appoint a successor for Senator Clinton, who still must be confirmed by her senate colleagues for the cabinet post.

Drescher will be up against political heavyweights Caroline Kennedy and New York Attorney-General Andrew Cuomo.

She will also be the latest in a long line of celebrities who believe they have what it takes to switch from entertainment to politics.

In the US alone, dozens of actors and other entertainers have made the move to politics.

Probably best-known of them is former president and Bedtime for Bonzo actor Ronald Reagan.

Sadly, she's also fanatically pro babykilling.

I simply assumed that was requirement to be Senator from New York

Yes, but it would be funny to see a cat fight between her and Babs Boxer. My money’s on the nanny.

I had a good long laugh when I saw this.

Someone told me she couldn't do any worse and then suggested we may as well have the Geico Lizard as President. Sadly he is not a natural-born citizen. But he'd make an excellent Governor of Illinois or Senator for Minnesota.

She'd have CSPAN viewers hitting the old mute botton.

I actually liked her as a character the few times I saw her show and I’m aware she’s pretty popular. I have nothing against her one way or another....except that voice. It’s like Gilbert Gottfried cubed.

Drescher will be up against political heavyweights Caroline Kennedy

Yeah, that's SOME heavyweight. A Kennedy who's dad was once President and who's brother killed a woman and escaped prison and kept his own political career viable for a lifetime.

I always thought that Cankles Rodham was the most annoying women in politics, but I stand corrected. Cankles might be where boners go to die, but Fran Drescher might be the face that launched a thousand Viagra prescriptions.

Meant to say her father’s brother...

And while popular lore shows JFk, RFK, and MLK and 3 brothers, the Kennedys tapped MLK’s phones.

And I say let Fran Drescher in. That voice would grate on the Senate’s ears and I would be glad for that. Ms. Nanny Goes To Washington. Imagine the fillibuster?

Before Ronald Reagan, John Wilkes Booth was probably the most famous actor to make a move on politics.

I used to like Fran Drescher when sh was doin ‘The Nanny’, but her considering a Senate seat as a fallback job from her dud of a comeback series, is just mindless. But in a way, I’d like to see her as a Senator for New York....They deserve the kind of administration she’d give them.

She can read a script better than Barack Obama, which means she’s even MORE articulate. Besides, she was in Hollywood Knights.

I’ll take an ignorant leftist harpy (with a voice that would make any GITMO prisoner confess), than have another airhead leftist Kennedy in Congress, or have another thug Cuomo leftist in any position of trust. Gov. Mario Cuomo used to deny that the Mafia existed, even during the dramatic evidence (films, tapes, photos) that came out at the Gambino/Gotti case trials. AG Cuomo is just as bad. The ABC Cuomo seems to be a nicer person - hope he stays that way.

Drescher’s slogan would be great:

“Elect a Nanny for a Nanny State”

You're right. Besides, Fran Drescher would have to go up against a young actress, as with any cattle call:

Italy has already elected several porno actresses to parliment. This world is screwed. Pop culture reigns over reason and the nations are being looted.

Everybody wants to be a senator. Considering what a cesspool Washington DC is, I just don’t get it.

It's put-on for the "Nanny" character. If you heard her speak in her "real" voice you wouldn't know who it was. geeez

Senators are legislators, they do not have “administrations.”

You have GOT to be kidding. Besides, where would the hemline be at any swearing in? Over her shoulders?

Gotta say she’d actually be better than that TOTAL drip Caroline, though. What a piece of work she is. Does ANY DEM in (or trying to be in) NY have ANYTHING GOING AT ALL??
