I have been to Chabad centers in Moscow and Germany which are stringently guarded after anti-Semitic attacks took place there. In Moscow, all the synagogues are patrolled by Russian police and private security guards wearing military uniforms, and visitors are required to pass through a metal detector.

In Frankfurt, there is a concrete barricade in front of the synagogue and a 24/7 police patrol. At the Jewish Center there is an electronic gate and visitors are challenged to respond in Hebrew before they are allowed to enter.

I would recommend that in states where it is allowed, shluchim (Chabad emissaries) should receive firearms training and conduct regular emergency drills. I am sure that there are IDF veterans and U.S. military veterans who would be happy to share their training and expertise.

Rabbi Zalman Shmotkin, a spokesman for the Brooklyn-based Chabad-Lubavitch,

I would recommend that in states where it is allowed, shluchim (Chabad emissaries) should receive firearms training and conduct regular emergency drills. I am sure that there are IDF veterans and U.S. military veterans who would be happy to share their training and expertise.

Ironically, arming the Lubavitchers would not be allowed in their home base of Brooklyn. Oh they could hire private security guards, but what good would that do them once they left the guarded facilities?

B. Hussein will only make this worse.

I once knew a BT who had been a martial arts expert. He should give classes to the schlichim. Unfortunately Chabada appeal is its openess, which can be hurt by needed security.

I find it most ironic that with this situation existing throughout the world the American "official" Jewish community's greatest fear is that some leisure-suited preacher will walk up to them and drawl "are you saved?"

Chabad’s openness is the best thing about it. Please never allow Muslims to terrify & intimidate Jews into withdrawing from the public.

Stragely, this would not be a problem at the Houston Chabad center. . . . .

(Or Alabama Jews, I bet, too.)

Perhaps an even better solution is to have young Jews become reserve police officers (e.g., part time sheriff deputy), which typically is an unpaid or minimal paid volunteer position with a couple days here and there as the requirement.

Under a relatively new federal law, off-duty law enforcement can carry their weapons at all times and in ALL STATES, except places like airports or federal buildings.

This way, they could have concealed carry in places with absured carry laws.

They also typically get assigned to their home area, which is real handy to act as a bridge between the community and the police.

This has been a real successful program in some China towns and other fairly insular groups.
