Japan 'should develop nuclear weapons' [former head of the Japanese air force]

And if the country had atomic weapons in 1945, it should have used them against the Allies, General Toshio Tamogami added.

Sacked as chief of staff of the Air Self-Defence Force in late October for writing an essay in which he claimed Japan was tricked into the war and that Japan was not the aggressor, Gen Tamogami has continued to embarrass the government by going further with his demands.

Those demands now include instilling nationalistic pride in Japanese schoolchildren, giving a freer hand to the military and revising the parts of the constitution that deal with the military.

Gen Tamogami has even likened Japan to North Korea for failing to guarantee his right to free speech and sacking him when he did speak out.

"The history of the world from the 15th century was one of aggression of white people towards the rest of the world," he said.

"Japan was the last nation that was able to resist aggression from other countries, but now there is only talk of Japan carrying out actions against Korea and China and a tendency to ignore what the white nation-states carried out for hundreds of years.

"Any nation has positive and negative elements and I believe that if we are told by neighbouring countries that Japan was the aggressor and carried out evil acts and we remain silent then this is detrimental to our national interest," he said. "We should counter-argue by saying what actually happened."

According to Gen Tamogami, Washington was aware that an attack was planned against Pearl Harbor in December 1941 but no warning was given to the forces there in order to win over public opinion in the US for a war.

Similarly, Japan's occupation and colonisation of the Korean peninsula, China and Taiwan were beneficial to

Say what you will, and I’m sure there are those here who will go all out in their blind hatred of the Japanese, but they did have the decency to kick this dangerous idiot out on his ear before he cause some real harm.

Wonder how he accounts for the invasion, and slaughter of the Chinese during the 30s, which by the way hasn’t been forgotten in China....

Don't look now,General, but the biggest problem your country has today...by far...comes from a country ruled by guys who look very,*very* much like you and your fellow countrymen.

One of the reasons I wouldn’t mind Japan (amending its constitution so that it can go about) building a modest nuke arsenal is the fact that loons like THIS guy get fired from defense-agency jobs when they, well, talk like loons.

White aggression against Japan? Tora! Tora! Tora!

Japan is what can be considered a '90-day nuclear' power.

They could develop and deploy an atomic or nuclear weapon in as little as 90 days.

It's all cookbook stuff now. No real science to develop, only the materials and the time need to be invested.

Taiwan, Israel, South Africa all fit into that category, with Israel most likely to have deployable nukes now.(nudge, nudge, wink, wink)

I’m not to comfortable with a nuclear armed Japan but hey, it’d be mighty handy the next time Godzilla or Mothra start a ruckus.

This guy's a freakin nutbunny, but on this one point, I agree. Japan has shown themselves to be a responsible world citizen.

Of course, we had to come kick their a&& and occupy them before they learned how to use a fork and a knife, but hey.

"Japan 'should develop nuclear weapons'"

He may be right. Unfortunately, he's obviously the wrong man to say it.

A few years ago, Japanese Defense Minister (I’m not sure if it’s the current one—I don’t pay that close attention to the cabinets of our allies) remarked “If Japan decides it needs nuclear weapons on Monday, by Friday it will have them.”

Given that the Japanese atomic energy agency has 20 of the 100 most powerful supercomputers in the world, I suspect they already have working designs, if not components ready for assembly, you know, things like nicely machined hollow spheres of plutonium, neutron sources, purified deuterium and tritium, shaped charges, . . .

Maybe he’s been reading the analyses that blamed the Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act not only for the Great Depression, but for WW II (or at least Japan’s involvement).

And just think! The sheeple just elected a protectionist in the middle of an economic downturn! Obama seems to want to play Herbert Hoover and FDR.

I think by “develop” he means, “assemble from parts on hand.”

If you really look at the Japanese situation in 1941, they were indeed in a pickle.

They had the choice of retreating to their home islands, largely abandoining a modern lifestyle and probably many of them starving. Or they could shoot for the empire of east Asia.

No other major options.

With one exception. They could have attacked northwest instead of south. USSR would have collapsed in 1941 had it faced a two-front war. Notably the Siberian Army reinforcements that saved Moscow could not have been sent to its rescue. Which might just make Nomonhan, the 1939 battle which gave the Japanese an intense aversion to tangling again with the Red Army, one of the the war’s most important battles.
