The Day I Considered Abortion

The Day I Considered Abortion: Could I trust God despite my baby's potential birth defects?

by Andrea Stone

I had no reason to suspect I was pregnant; my period was only a day or two late. But all weekend, I just didn't feel right. So first thing Monday morning, I took a pregnancy test.

Positive.

I felt as though a lightning bolt struck me. The test couldn't be right. Two years earlier, my husband, Joe, had had a vasectomy. Joe and I'd been married seven years, and we already had two children—a four-year-old daughter and a not-quite-two-year-old son. We were convinced our family was complete; at 39 and 33, Joe and I felt too old for new-baby all-nighters again.

Then cold fear squeezed my heart: I was on Accutane, a prescription acne medication known to cause severe birth defects.

The rest of the day was a blur of raw emotion and overwhelming worry. My physician rushed me into her office and verified the home-pregnancy test results. She referred me to a genetic counselor, telling me not to make any decisions till I saw her. She never said "abortion," but she alluded to it.....

Ya, I’ve been there and done that too. My daughter is 2 years old and is severely disabled. It’s very tough. Abortion was never the answer though. I wish your daughter the best.

Thanks for posting the link to a moving article. Your daughter and her husband (and probably you as well) really endured a lot of anguish over that pregnancy. I am forwarding it to my wife to share with her bible study class.

Excellent article, thanks for posting - and congratulations on an additional grandchild!

This line cracked me up, though ... at 39 and 33, Joe and I felt too old for new-baby all-nighters again. , since I've had four additional children since I was 33.

People always comment on what a happy child Faith is. I'm convinced she's happy just to be alive. And when Faith smiles at me with her little dimpled cheeks, I thank God I scraped together a mustard seed of faith and didn't have the abortion.

My wife and I thank God that a woman named Olga scraped together enough faith through her crisis pregnancy, in a nation where 70% of pregnancies end in abortion, to give the gift of life to our son.

Thank you all for your kind comments. Yes, it was really tough on all of us, but we hung in there. For some reason, I just felt moved to post the story today.

Faith just turned 4, and my daughter and her family are in Korea (Joe is in the Army). I miss them.

My Wife and I had an unexpected pregnancy when she was 41 and I was 44. We already had two children, a boy and a girl, who were teenagers by then. Frankly, it scared the crap out of the both of us.

Neither one of us ever considered aborting her, despite the hardships that would follow. That ‘mistake’ is now a beautiful three year-old girl who has put a new spark back into my life. I simply cannot imagine life without her.

Why on earth would any married couple get an abortion? Unreal.

Thank you for posting this, it is one of the most powerful pro-life pieces I’ve read in a long time (and I read several dozen a week).

Great story! I have noticed myself that as my faith gets stronger I don’t think of the possibility of having a special needs child as being a horrible thing. When I had my second child at 35, I was scared to death of the possiblity. Now I know that God is in charge, and we have no idea of what he has in store for us. The current national obsession with killing potentially imperfect children is a symptom of so many having lost their faith and thus needing to imagine that we mere humans can control every last detail of life.

That line made me giggle, too. Don’t you know you’re almost dead at 33? LOL!

Truly a great article. I love it when people choose life and we don’t get to hear these stories very often.
