[. . .]there is nevertheless a sense in Britain that this was nothing to do with us - a horrible event happening in a faraway place. . . .
Those who believe that Islamist terror can be halted by addressing grievances around the world are profoundly mistaken.
[. . .]
Yesterday, Gordon Brown said . . .'Mumbai'. . .had raised 'huge questions' about how the world should address violent extremism.
Wrongly believing that it can use religious fundamentalists to counter terrorist recruitment and that it must at all costs avoid causing offence, it is failing to stop extremists spreading their propaganda, handling their demands with kid gloves and undermining genuine moderates among Britain's Muslims who have been left exposed, vulnerable and abandoned. The reason for such flawed policies is the false analysis on which they are based.
The Government and security establishment refuse to acknowledge that what we are facing is a religious war.
. . .they think that Islamist terrorism is driven by grievances which are basically the fault of the West. . . .you have only to look around the world or at the history of the past four decades and more to see the absurdity and ignorance of this view.
Look at Thailand,. . .currently convulsed by Islamist terrorism in the south with bombings, beheadings and the murder of Buddhists.
Look at the persecution of Christians in Nigeria. Look at the Islamist terrorism in the Philippines.
Look at the attacks variously upon New York, Bali, Istanbul, Jakarta, Sharm el Sheikh, Casablanca, Madrid, London and India. If we don't understand what we are fighting, we cannot defeat it. Mumbai is yet another wake-up call - to a Britain that is still in a trance of denial.

Sigh. This isn’t rocket science. To stop the terrorism you have to kill lots of Muslims in key countries. Such as Pakistan, Iran, Syria, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, the UK, etal. Keep on killing them until they either convert to something else or to they decide that introducing toleration of others into their worship is a wonderful idea.
The messenger IS the message; and the public do not like the message.
Dear Melanie,
Welcome to OUR world and thanks for chiming in.
Sincerely,
The United States of America
(How many OTHER ostriches are beginning to pull their heads out of . . . . . . . the sand?)
UGH!
Just thugs. all thugs. Gangs in LA..Paki’s in Bombay...Muzzies in Britain...and more Islamoterrorists in the US....US rapper jerks
Just dumb young and animal violent thugs.( my apologies to the animal kingdom)
I do NOT ascribe to the center tank fuel explanation. But if the Pentagon and WTC do not have ‘staying power’ in our public consciousness - or we do not allow it to; then we continue to damn ourselves by ignoring our history.
I am more than frightened that too many refuse to do just that. . .even now, with the 'latest' and still; as we speak. . .
Kudos to Melanie for nailing it, however. The 'truth of the matter' should never be. . . so 'refreshing'.
Agree. . .the ‘most radical’ amongst us, must be dealt with. No different, IMHO, than dealing with a virus. . .a deadly virus. They must be disabled. But, somehow; see no ‘civilized’ effort to do that and it becomes it’s own contradiction in ‘civilized’ terms.
that makes sense. I'm still scratching my head over numbers. Is it true that there were only TEN terrorists??
We could have a nuclear war and people would forget about it long enough to dance in the fallout.
Humanity will likely go extinct. The cause: stupidity epidemic
It looks as if there were only 11 or so killers.
Here is the one little thing that has me puzzled; if indeed the killers had state backing, why weren’t the killers they also armed AT LEAST with RPGs?
Indeed the Mi-17 helicopters that delivered the Indian Commandos were sometimes hovering for OVER FOUR MINUTES directly above the hotel rooftops before disgorging their troops —sitting ducks for professional terrorists.
The only reason I think they weren’t shot at AT LEAST by PRG’s was because the nasties simply didn’t have them.
And while I am ABSOLUTELY no Pakistan lover, this suggests to me that these guys more or less through this operation together with very little in the way of backing; you had some young, fit, intelligent kool-aid drinkers who went out to really kick some a$$, more or less after just a year or so of target practice and indoctrination.
But of course if Islamabad disappears in a bright white flash (from India), well, I’ll serve as the whole trumpet section, OK?
No, no...it will be very serious, but in fact India and Pakistan probably have 35 or so tactical weapons each, and all of those are considerably smaller than Hiroshima.
If you drive by Las Vegas, that’s quite near a place that over 1,000 nukes were lit off, more than 100 above ground.
What we’re facing is very, very serious, but...when a tactical nuke is used the huge surprise that will come is that life indeed will go on.
No exctinction will occur, and most of the (huge) weapons we see in film clips are very, very large compared to 95% of modern tactical nukes.
There’s just so much about this whole thing that is PUZZLING. Why didn’t the police shoot? Why were there so few raiders? Why didn’t ANYBODY fight back? So many questions, so few answers.
Clearly, no bias here. . .but those papers that appreciate/serve Conservative politics/polices are the most reliable news resources. . .their 'reliablility' commensurate with their 'Conservative indexing' - so to speak. . .
I think Barclays Brothers also bought UK Telegraph from Conrad Black’s company. They are interesting and somewhat secretive billionaires. I think they live on one of the Channel Islands in a castle like home.
I wasn’t referring to Pakistan/India or to real possibilities.
I was just making a point. If somehow we had the nukes, that’s what people would do.
YUP!
In the US, the police would have been furious avengers.
Interesting links and ‘life’ for sure. . .
It should have been a wake-up call, but if no one is listening it might as well have been a fart.
