Global AIDS crisis overblown? Some dare to say so

LONDON – LONDON – As World AIDS Day is marked on Monday, some experts are growing more outspoken in complaining that AIDS is eating up funding at the expense of more pressing health needs.

They argue that the world has entered a post-AIDS era in which the disease's spread has largely been curbed in much of the world, Africa excepted.

"AIDS is a terrible humanitarian tragedy, but it's just one of many terrible humanitarian tragedies," said Jeremy Shiffman, who studies health spending at Syracuse University.

Roger England of Health Systems Workshop, a think tank based in the Caribbean island of Grenada, goes further. He argues that UNAIDS, the U.N. agency leading the fight against the disease, has outlived its purpose and should be disbanded.

"The global HIV industry is too big and out of control. (We have created a monster) with too many vested interests and reputations at stake, ... too many relatively well paid HIV staff in affected countries, and too many rock stars with AIDS support as a fashion accessory," he wrote in the British Medical Journal in May.

The AIDS threat was overblown for reasons of political correctness.

“By 2006, AIDS funding accounted for 80 percent of all American aid for health and population issues, according to the Global Health Council.

In Ethiopia, Rwanda, Uganda and elsewhere, donations for HIV projects routinely outstrip the entire national health budgets.

In a 2006 report, Rwandan officials noted a “gross misallocation of resources” in health: $47 million went to HIV, $18 million went to malaria, the country’s biggest killer, and $1 million went to childhood illnesses.”

Incredible. Yeah, I would call that “overblown” to the nth.

Among non-drug-using heterosexuals in the West, it has always been VASTLY overblown.

According to the CDC, annual US AIDS deaths are largely caused by male to male contact, about 16,000 a year. Second cause is drug use.

Transmission Category Estimated # of AIDS Cases, in 2006

Male-to-male sexual contact 16,001

Injection drug use 4,410

Male-to-male sexual contact and injection drug use 1,803

High-risk heterosexual contact* 4,558

Other** 217

Interestingly enough I looked this up after hearing the CA marriage initiative was passed.

So the question is, why do Democrats support gay marriage if the leading cause of AIDS comes from men having sex with men? Moreover, how can these men be considered good parents if their behavior leads to a long and painful death?

Just like everything the liberals touch, if reality isn’t on your side, change the definition and scream “CRISIS”!

Casting AIDS as a disease of Homos (and drug addicts) is considered bigoted. There is only a 1 in 1000 chance that unprotected heterosexual intercourse with an AIDS carrier will lead to transmission of the virus (slightly higher for men to women than women to men), but it increases 10 to 100 fold for gay sex. If the disease affected mostly a small proportion of (a deviant) population, there was no way it could get the amount of attention or funding for research that it has. So there was a big movement with the help of the media to try and portray AIDS as a mainstream disease that could affect just about anyone. We have all seen the ads. In reality the vast majority of AIDS transmissions occur from gay sex, sharing needles and contaminated blood transfusion. As for Africa, first of all the situation isn't as bad as the media has been telling us for years, and secondly the # 1 cause is contamination resulting from poor hygienic conditions in hospitals.

I gather one of the particular reasons that HIV is so widespread in Africa is because STDs are generally so common that it is typical for many men to have open sores on their genitalia, which can almost double HIV numbers, because unlike everywhere else, females can easily spread the disease to males.

Conversely, in China, there is a strong possibility that HIV infections are ignored among females, as part of the general disdain for females as a whole. This preference for males, especially for male children, has resulted in great imbalance in their male-female demographic balance, as couples are often eager to abort female children, in large part due to the 1-child per family rule.

The objectivity of this article blew up with that one word.

I remember reading in an article a year ago (WSJ, I think) that health workers don’t even perform an HIV antibody test in Africa — too costly and too time consuming. A diagnosis of HIV infection is made by checking off a list of symptoms: if the patient has more than a certain number, then he or she will be defined as having HIV.

Turns out many of these symptoms are common to malaria, tuberculosis, and other diseases in these areas.

MEDICAL FACILITIES AND HEALTH INFORMATION: Basic modern medical care and medicines are available in the principal cities of the UAE, but not necessarily in outlying areas. The United Arab Emirates has imposed HIV/AIDS travel restrictions on persons applying for a work or residence visa. An HIV/AIDS test is required for work or residence permits; testing must be performed after arrival. A U.S. HIV/AIDS test is not accepted. Please inquire directly with the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates at http://uae-embassy.org before you travel

Just think Michael Fumento wrote “The Myth of Heterosexual Aids” back in 1989. Billions of dollars have been wasted since then. We could have wiped out malaria or other far more dangerous diseases.
