The only gunman captured by police after a string of attacks on Mumbai told authorities he belonged to the Pakistani militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, a senior police officer said Sunday.
Police have said 10 gunmen terrorized Mumbai during a 60-hour siege, and all but one were shot dead.
Joint Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria said the assailant now in custody told police the group had intended to hit more targets during their attacks on India's financial capital that left at least 174 dead.
"Lashkar-e-Taiba is behind the terrorist acts in the city," Maria told reporters. "The terrorists were from a hardcore group in the L-e-T."
India's Home Ministry could not be immediately reached for comment.
The group has long been seen as a creation of the Pakistani intelligence service to help wage its clandestine war against India in disputed Kashmir.

Don’t they mean that there were 10 terrorists on the front lines? I don’t believe for a minute that they didn’t have plants in each one of the locations who were the second tier.
The Indian security forces appear to be incompetent cowards.
I would strongly disagree with that. The head of the Indian Anti Terrorism Force was killed in the frontlines fighting the terrorists. And the Indian Comandoes were very brave and competent.
60 hours for 10 guys who killed 300. If thats not incompetent please tell me what is?
How could “10 gunmen” attack 10 different major targets at the same time?
There had to be considerably more than 10 gunmen.
Why does India — and the media — seem content to accept the illogical as the absolute truth?
What’s going on here?
What is the leader doing in the front lines, rather than cordinating an attack? 60 hours for 10 guys who killed 300. If thats not incompetent please tell me what is?
Before you call them cowards..establish your credibility.
The Indian armed forces have been fighting Pakistan and terrorists for a long time. Their crack units fight in the mountains at 10k plus feet against entrenced enemies.
I’m sure they had a great concern to try to prevent as many civilian deaths as possible and took the approach they thought best. Note that some of their seniors were killed..leading from the front.
Islamist Outlaws.
Why I believe the article neglected to include a very important word! I wonder what could have happened. What could that word be?
There were civilians galore holed up in their rooms in those hotels. The commando’s could not just fire willy nilly in all directions. This was a classic guerrilla city fighting. The bad guys unfortunately have the advantage.
Before you call them cowards..establish your credibility. Before you accuse somebody of calling the Indian Police and Military cowards, please read what I actually wrote.
I was questioning whether or not it's possible that only 10 men caused all that carnage. I don't believe it.
If I'm accusing anybody of anything it's covering up facts of what they know about the situation for purposes known only to themselves. Now maybe those purposes are noble, maybe they aren't. But I suspect some kind of censorship of information.
Just like in this country, when the person who attacked the Jewish Airline at LAX was labeled "not a terrorist" by our own domestic geniuses.
Every country has self-anointed geniuses in its bureaucratic structure. India, I'm sure, is no exception.
In any event, from what I read there was some very poor management of the Indian security forces. I wasn't commenting on that in my original post (I was talking about the unbelievability of the "official" story). But since you mention it; it does seem there was a whole lot of screwing up going on.
And that's not calling anyone a coward.
