In 1992 George H. W. Bush was an unpopular incumbent president forced to run against both Bill Clinton and H. Ross Perot.
For the offensive of not being Ronald Reagan and getting snuckered into raising taxes after publicly pledging not to do exactly that, Bush was targeted for extinction by many people who would ordinarily have been counted among his certain and strongest supporters.
Those responding to Roper’s exit polls and calling themselves conservatives, reported having voted 18% for Clinton as well as 18% for Perot.
Those identifying themselves as Republicans who could be characterized as “conservative lites” voted 10% for Clinton and 17% for Perot.
A good case could be made that were it not for these defections, Bush would’ve won, and we wouldn’t have seen a president sell technology to the Chinese Communists, turn the Oval Office into a bordello or have to explain to children what a Lewinsky is.
Those voting that way used “1992 think” which was dubious but somewhat excusable then. They told themselves foolishness like “ after four years of Clinton they’ll come crawling back to conservatism in 1996.” Time has proved those of us who counseled against that dangerous leap of faith dead right. “They” didn’t crawl back; they won’t in 2012.
“1992 think” is back. Conservatives voted 20% for Barack Obama in the duel beliefs that “they will crawl back in four years” and the very solemnly spoken, “Sometimes you have to kill the patient to save him.”
The original “1992 think” put a degenerate in the White House who cheapened everything he touched. This version promises to bring us much worse: a government telling us what to do, when to do it and how much to pay so it can buy the votes of the growing unproductive sector of our nation.

We have nobody to blame but ourselves. The only other thing is that Bush did the best that he could do. 9/11 changed everything. If that did not happen imagine where we would have been. That diverted the economy. If Clinton was in office he would have said, “We are going to find the people responsible for this and bring them to justice.” And then he would have done nothing. It took them seven years to find the Rose Law firm’s billing records, and they were sitting on the end table the whole time.

And before anyone starts touting the economic acumen of slick willie, lest we forget, he simply presided over the internet boom. It was actually started with Netscape and one of the biggest IPO in US history. Unfortunately, the street became accustomed to highly valued companies with swabo for hard assets. The market conditions of the time could be directly attributed to the Reagan presidency (not completely undone by HWB), and the growth of all things ‘internet.’

Clinton in 92 led to the GOp taking control of Congress in 94 for the first time in 40 years.
This thesis fails on that account. The White House is not everything. People were happy to leave a marginalized Clinton in office in 96 cause the GOP Congress moderated him and Dole was a cold fish.

“Snuckered” is an apt description of that little episode, still remember the beaming Democrats stand with Pres. Bush when he made the announcement (he didn’t even see it coming .. nor learn anything from it). The scenes from the current bailout footage was eerily similar to the tax hike announcement.

Great response to this freeze dried GOP hack Coach Collins. After Reagan the Rockyfellows got Bush 1, who begot Clinton who begat Bush 2 which completed the cycle that has led to BO...it is almost time to throw all the bum’s out along with their enablers!

GOP cut their own throats by not balancing trade with jobs. They let corporate America do anything they want. Bankers and insurance companies found loopholes in SEC regs and created an intricate system of leveraging and it blew up in their faces and made the subprime mortgage collapse thousands of times worst. Emptying regions of the US of manufacturing jobs to China and etc left huge areas with high unemployment and recession four nearly three plus years with no new high tech replacements (many of these jobs were offshored and outsourced as soon as Chinese counerpart software and hardware factories were set up by the US corporate leaders). GOP kept preaching free trade and free market that benefited the few on top and stagnated a majority of the Reagan Dems salaries. In the end, the impatient Reagan Dems voted for BO despite his stands on guns and cultural issues. 2006 was the red flag when many mid west and certain traditional GOP districts went conservative Dem. Now we will enter a Depression where neither party can save the US. Average American is maxed out on his credit cards and maxed out on his equity loans, and with the 401k tanking, there will be less spending and more saving to pay down debts. Those who are cash rich and debt free will come out on top and those who are in debt may end up in poverty.
The bottom line is that, just as you go to war with the military you have, not the military you want, you go into an election with the electorate you have. It does no one any good to blame the voters afterward.
We have to look at this as a lesson: don't run moderate candidates that the base cannot get enthused about. You need to have a conservative candidate who is personable, and can communicate the benefits of conservatism.
You are omitting the role government regulation played in creating the subprime mess, which is considerable. Look up CRA.
Also, government regulation has hurt American manufacturing, contributing to the loss of said jobs.
Dick Morris ( I know) says Obama in 2010 will have a 20% approval rate.
Well, Dick Morris can’t always be wrong, can he? :-)
And I do doubt that 20% of conservatives voted for Obama. That would have made it a landslide.
