An Iowa football fan in town for the Gophers final game at the Metrodome helped Minneapolis police catch a criminal Friday night.
As bars were closing in the Warehouse District early Saturday morning, officers responded to shots fired in a parking lot near 5th Street and Hennepin Avenue.
At the parking lot they found Christopher Scott Sinclair, 29, of Minnetonka shooting up a car.
For him to start firing off five shots randomly, we're very lucky he didn't hit somebody, Sgt. Jesse Garcia said.
Sinclair took off running when he saw police. Police chased Sinclair for about two city blocks, where he ditched his gun in a sewer outside the Hard Rock Café.
Outrunning police, Sinclair was about to be home free, but he didnt count on Matt Shultz.
Right as we were walking out of the bar, we saw the guy running and two cops chasing after him and my brother just yells out, Get him!, Shultz said.
Shultz, 24, was in town for the Iowa-Minnesota football game. The Iowa native and former high school wide receiver passed the officers in pursuit, and a block later, caught up to Sinclair.
So then I just ran up behind him and put my arm around his neck and brought him down, Shultz said. Then I had him in a sleeper hold until the cops came and they took care of the rest.
Minneapolis police dont recommend citizens taking the law into their own hands, but theyre happy to have their suspect, without anyone getting hurt.
We don't always recommend that someone help out, with someone potentially armed, but in this case it worked out well and the guy went to jail and nobody was hurt, Sgt. Jesse Garcia said.
Sinclair was booked into jail on suspicion of discharging a weapon, property damage and carrying a weapon without a permit.
Bad enough that the Hawkeyes smoked the Gophers 55-0...a Hawkeye fan outruns a gun perp that has outrun the MPD...
Free doughnuts for the Iowa crowd!!!!
I grew up in Iowa and the rivalries can get out of hand sometimes. A long time ago there was a war between the Minnesota and Iowa. It got so bad Minnesota threw some dynamite across the border.
The Iowans lit it and threw it back.
*chuckle*
I read this story and cannot stop laughing.....
“Don’t stop crime, That’s our job, you civilians!!!”
LMAO!
I’m thinking the cops already ate all the doughnuts.
Love your comment !!!!!
I didn’t know suspicion of discharging a weapon was a crime.
OK, is it me or can someone tell me why these Police officers need to wear those stupid button down dress shirts and polyester pants, a swell thick belt (ok I know why they need a belt but why not strapped across the chest maybe?) and those big azz shoes. No wonder they don’t run too many guys down...they need loose clothing so they can maneuver and cut and some soft shoes to run in. COME ON...am I nuts or does this make a little sense?...
Iowa hated to host Minnesota. Their cheerleaders kept going on the field to graze! In basketball, their cheerleaders would do the splits and get stuck to the floot.
ohhhhh, nasty me!
I sorry!
“Love your comment !!!!!”
Which one???
;-)
Glad Iowa can tackle somebody.
Here I was thinking the guy was going to step into the sidewalk from the door of the bar and blind-side him. Imagine my surprise when reading “I ran past the cops and got the guy”!
Great story. Not to throw any cold water on what the civilian did - good for him, need more like him - but the cops are so encumbered with gear i’m surprised they ever caught up. My old cop pal and mentor - being a rather large person, donuts no, but pasta yes - would cut off the bad guys with his squad and invariably they would run into the squad knocking themselves silly. Not 100% effective, but pretty close, most did not have the brains to keep from cutting across streets or alleys.
“I didnt know suspicion of discharging a weapon was a crime.”
Probably not. But, outrunning the Minneapolis Police Department and then being outrun and caught by an out of town football fan from Iowa upon his departure from a Minneapolis bar will cause the cops to invent something, in a face saving move....
Gotta love the “sleeper hold” thing....
“Glad Iowa can tackle somebody.”
They had no problem, Saturday.
Don’t mind me. I have a pet peeve against news people who have the habit of saying someone was arrested on suspicion of...... Suspicion of something is not a crime.
LOL! I was going to post something similar but you eat me to it.
eat=beat in previous post.
Oh, no....I am with you...
