EXCLUSIVE: Obama to delay repeal of 'don't ask, don't tell'
Wash TImes ^ | 11/21/08 | Rowan Scarborough

Posted on 11/20/2008 7:30:55 PM PST by pissant

President-elect Barack Obama will not move for months, and perhaps not until 2010, to ask Congress to end the military's decades-old ban on open homosexuals in the ranks, two people who have advised the Obama transition team on this issue say.

Repealing the ban was an Obama campaign promise. However, Mr. Obama first wants to confer with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and his new political appointees at the Pentagon to reach a consensus and then present legislation to Congress, the advisers said.

"I think 2009 is about foundation building and reaching consensus," said Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. The group supports military personnel targeted under the ban.

Mr. Sarvis told The Washington Times that he has held "informal discussions" with the Obama transition team on how the new president should proceed on the potentially explosive issue.

Lawrence Korb, an analyst at the Center for American Progress and an adviser to the Obama campaign, said the new administration should set up a Pentagon committee to make recommendations to Congress on a host of manpower issues, including the gay ban.

"If it's part of a larger package, it has a better chance of getting passed," he said.

Why isn’t Obama doing this on the 2nd or 3rd day in office, like Bill Clinton tried to do? If gay issues are such important civil rights issues, and liberals/Democrats/radicals are all about anything that somebody says is a civil right, how can he delay this?????

I was hoping he would push this on the 1st day or 2, then move on to homosexual marriage on day 3 or 4. The people deserve to know the entire Obama agenda, not just bits and pieces of it.

Obama is trying to keep the military from going apes**t. This gives enough time to get officers and the like in place. 1.5-2 years is enough time to get people in place to issue orders of questionable authority.

Why do we even have Primaries let alone elections. These guys make promises to win a primary, then move to the center with a new set of promises, and never keep many, if any. It’s a joke. On what basis do we voters make a decision?

Mitt Romney wanted to do away with it also, he disapproved of Clinton not going all the way and just opening it up to the gays.

I support the repeal. I think the policy is hypocritical and makes no sense whatsoever. The military should not be peeking into soldiers' sex lives.

Maybe Obama will just be “present” for the first four years in the hope that he could get reelected.

There might be a nasty culture clash with openly homosexual men and heterosexual soldiers sharing military shower facilities from 5am to 7am every day.

There are disciplinary rules in places to deal with sexual harassment and that kind of stuff. In my view, as long as a person conducts himself decently in public, its none of my business what he does in private with another consenting adult.

Since Clinton was the “First Black President”, I’m guessing The One will have to settle for being the “First Gay President”.

ApeSh*t ??? Even when Clinton ordered those disgusting orders we still followed them. O could give that and the military won’t miss a step. There WOULD however, be mass resignations of officer commissions and enlisted men would not re-up.

No. The premise is that you have to lie about who you are to military interviewers and stay in the closet. That's not a rule imposed on heterosexuals. I would prefer going back to a ban on gays serving in the military but if that's not possible, I want it to be open and above board - the same rule applies to every one.

Yup...and in 6 months we need to remind the peeps the pie ain’t in the oven either.

And remind them of his first speech after getting elected: change will come but it may be a year or even after my first term!

The peeps aren’t that patient and neither are the homos.

His ship is listing mightily in the harbor.

How is "We won't ask you" peeking? How is "Don't tell us" peeking?

I really, seriously, don't give a flip what consenting adults get up to with each other. That is fine....don't tell me and I won't ask, and you can do what you want and I don't get more information than I want to know flashed at me.

It doesn't peak into their sex lives. That is the "don't ask" part of "don't ask, don't tell."

You are correct. They should go back to the way it used to be. IF you are gay, you don’t get in. Ask ahead of time and avoid the DADT crap.

Who really wants to die for these Marxists in control?? I see they are worried they won’t have their political enemies to sacrifice while they demonize those who serve and have made a mockery of our nation’s defense by enabling and encouraging our enemies!! I see this as panic that maybe Matt Damon and the cultists might actually have to serve now that their messiah is in charge and are trying to discourage those against their policies from getting out and not wanting to die for them. Won’t those liberals die for their messiah??

Pretty much the entire crop of GOP candidates were “moderate” at best.

Many were outright liberal on many issues, like McCain, Romney, Huck and Giuliani.

I voted for Ron Paul.

It is an administrative headache as well by giving service members the "I'm gay!" wild card to play should they want to go home. And yes, I've seen this happen.

There is already plenty of gays (and plenty more lesbians) serving. In this day and age, few of them even try and hide it anymore. Younger people entering the service these days don't really care that much if someone is gay or not. At this point, it is a foregone conclusions that DADT will be repealed and replaced with something closer to the British model of inclusion. The military will likely still get to keep rules prohibiting sodomy in the UCMJ but, like prostitution, they won't be strongly enforced.

The day homosexuals are allowed to serve openly in the military is the same day homosexual activist lobby politicians to demand a certain percentage of homosexual officers/Sergeant Major/Chief Master Sergeants/Master Chief Petty Officer be “appointed”. Also current military personnel will be nailed “if they say the wrong thing” which they do on a constant basis (Un-PC).

Tell me , homosexual “couples” who adopt or have civil “relationships”, are they entitled to family housing? I am not to thrilled with the idea of turning military housing into “fire islands”. And yes I have lived next to homosexual couples (Off base), it was a revolving door of “interesting” characters. I do not wish those characters on a military base where children play freely (Unlike off base).

Will all do respect, to hell with you or any "brass" opinions that want to turn the military into a PC playground. Certain standards of BEHAVIOR should be applied. To think that homosexuals are the same as women, blacks, Indians, Latinos, etc... is a huge insult and devoid of any rational logic.
