Thursday November 20, 2008 It is time for Sen. Byrd to retire His 50 years are long enough HIS friends won't tell him this, so maybe the one guy in West Virginia who is not a fan of Robert C. Byrd should tell him: It is time to retire from the Senate.
Fifty years is enough.
His is a remarkable story. Byrd's rise from the hardscrabble of Sophia in Raleigh County to being a couple of heartbeats from the presidency is a story that should live on at least in West Virginia lore.
After a nice run as Senate Democratic leader, Byrd became the chairman of the appropriations committee. It requires a nimble brain to select exactly where in the $3.2 trillion budget to park the Robert C. Byrd this and the Robert C. Byrd that.
The billion-dollar Byrd brain still works with Swiss-watch precision. He counted noses last week and realized he lacks the votes to remain as chairman.
They told him: It's time.
If I am following the law correctly, a retirement in February, so Byrd can bear witness to the inauguration of the new president on Jan. 20, would allow Gov. Joe Manchin to appoint a Democrat who would then have ample time to establish prowess as an earmarker and be rewarded with an election to a two-year term in 2010.
And the state can rename the state holiday on the day after Thanksgiving "Robert C. Byrd Day" in honor of his birthday.
Whatever it takes.

The time for him to retire was 1986.
Kind of a glowing description of a filthy racist with a very feeble mind who couldn’t find Clinton’s disgusting behavior worth a conviction . . . almost cruel to watch the old fuddy fumble with his words and make a fool of himself. Guess they missed that in the article.
Dont retire Senator Byrd. The party of racism needs its leader to stick with them.
The Grim Reaper will retire him before the voters do.
Of course the State itself would have to be renamed West Byrd, or some such. It would only be a logical progression as virtually everything else in the State is named after Byrd now! But then, if breathtaking arrogance and self-interest were illegal, the senate would be forced to meet in San Quentin.
Just wondering, beside all the pork for WV, what is RCB’s great accomplishment as a senator?
Is it time to throw out that carton of cottage cheese marked, “Best if used by April 2, 1972”?
His nickname of “SHEETS”!!!
You must be dyslexic.
The time for him to retire was 1896.
Time to hang up the sheets.
If he retires, who will be the Senate’s Grand Kleagle?
There’s still a 2 lane county road that in WV that hasn’t been named after him, once that’s done, he can retire.
Past time for him to retire IMHO.
Unfortunately for West Virginia, Byrd is one of those Senators who is determined to remain on the job until he dies
The country continues to suffer due to the longevity of certain Senators and SC Justices.
I saw him today on Fox on the floor of the Senate when Stevens gave his goodbye speech. He was in a wheel chair. He couldn’t applaud Stevens because of a disability and had to resort to banging one hand on the desk. He’s a hard headed guy and I expect him to die in office.
“...billion-dollar Byrd brain...” Sweet!
If you lived in WV you would know that is not a glowing article about RCB. Just to suggest he retire is blasphemy. Surber’s a good guy just trying to be kind .
I’d personally like to have a simple physical and mental test at the beginning of each yearly session. First, the gentleman or lady must walk...without the help of others....1,000 feet without the aid of a person. Second, the individual must be able to name (with the help of a physical border map)...at least forty of the fifty states. If you pass...you get a free ticket for the entire year.
I would personally question five senators today as to their mental or physical ability...and at least eight representatives. If they can’t pass the test...they shouldn’t be there, and the state ought to appoint someone to temporarily be there or permanently be there.
Its a joke for the nation to accept Byrd as a senator when the guy is incapable of doing even simple math or walking without the aid of a personal aid.
