'Country First?' Ask those jailed border agents
New Jersey Star-Ledger ^ | November 15, 2008 | Paul Mulshine

Posted on 11/15/2008 6:01:00 PM PST by Gary Johnson in 2012

As I noted in a post during the Republican convention in September, there was something fishy about the Republicans' use of the slogan "Country First" in the recent campaign.

Why not "America First?" We got the answer the other day when the Bush administration continued its attack on the two U.S. Border Patrol agents who were sentenced to long jail terms for shooting and wounding a drug smuggler.

The Bush Justice Department continued to go after the men this week and succeeded in an effort to prevent any significant reduction in the sentences of former agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean.

Ramos was sentenced to 11 years and Compean 12 years for the incident in which they shot a man who was later caught smuggling drugs over the border. The Bush administration's persecution of the pair has outraged right-wingers all over America, but the administration has pushed ahead with the prosecution in an obvious attempt to curry favor with the Mexican government.

Bush of course also supports an immigration amnesty that would have amounted to an open-borders policy with Mexico.

Meanwhile Tom Tancredo, the Colorado congressman who has been ostracized by his fellow Republicans because he really does put America first, is asking President-Elect Barack Obama to pardon the agents.

"These are the kind of men whose government failed and destroyed them - all while they were serving a cause greater than themselves. These men deserve justice," Tancredo said in a letter to Obama.

This may be the ultimate embarrassment for the awful administration of George W. Bush. We've reached the point where it's necessary to appeal to a Democratic president to reverse the anti-American stance of a Republican.

The young republicans who were forced to take down the pro border control signs at the convention didn’t do much for my faith in the GOP either.

I know I’ll get jumped on for this, but these two Border Agents lied about what happened. Once I learned that, I have not been able to suport them. Whatever happened that day, they tainted their own case. And I am very sorry that it happened that way.

Putting on a badge does not place the wearer above the law where they feel entitled to act as judge jury and executioner, knowing their guilt they attempted to cover up their abuse of power making the situation even worse for themselves.

So are you sorry that Johnny Sutton also lied and omitted evidence relevant to the trial?

Why not "America First?"

McCain didn't want to be seen as questioning Ubama's "patriotism". It's an aisle-crossing moderate thing. You wouldn't understand.

Please contact President Bush and ask for pardon. Keep it nice. I know some of you think it wont help, but there is strength in numbers.

They were not jailed for doing their job, they were jailed for LYING about and hiding evidence, which is obstruction of justice.

They did the right thing, but tried to mislead the investigating authorities about some of their activities. Like “Dog” Chapman learned, the law is the law, no matter who you are.

"...but these two Border Agents lied about what happened."

I think you're a little confused here. The maximum punishment they could and should have received for what they lied about was to be fired. What they received jail time for was the bogus charge of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. The only one committing a felony at the time of the shooting was the drug smuggler who was then shot during the commission of his felony.

Figure that one out if you can.

For President Bush to allow this travesty of justice to continue and not pardon these to agents for a crime they didn't commit will be to his everlasting shame and disgrace.

So they didn’t give contradictory statements immediately after the incident and later? I’m not asking this to be an ass, but I tuned out for the most part after reading that they did. I don’t have any sources handy. I’m sure you’ve heard of this issue though, and might have something clearing up the discrepancies or perceived discrepancies?

I’m not going to pretend to know all of the facts. But it is a felony for peace officers to tamper with evidence in some if not all states, and that is without using a firearm in the commission.

Anyway, I’m not trying to fire up fight here. I’m really not. I just don’t understand why people want to support corrupt Border Agents.

Sutton’s star witness was caught running drugs again during the Ramos and Compean trial and that groin leech Sutton made sure the jury didn’t hear about it.

Couldn’t have anyone questioning Davila’s reliability as a witness.

The GOP needs to have its nose rubbed in its own vomi before the country-clubbers will admit they they are seriously out of touch it the heartland on the Ramos/Compean issue.
