MANY Japanese were surprised that a hotel chain, under a cloud for shoddy earthquake-proofing standards, should sponsor a competition for the best essay to deny Japans wartime role as an aggressor and sponsor of atrocities. But then the chains boss, Toshio Motoya, is a vigorous historical revisionist (and big supporter of Shinzo Abe, prime minister in 2006-07). More astounding, then: the competition winner, Toshio Tamogami, was none other than the head of Japans air force.

You know, I know a very talented violinist who is originally from China. She lost all four of her grandparents and several other family members in what has become known as the Rape of Nanking.
She once told me that “You Americans were right dropping the atomic bombs on Japan, but why did you only drop two? You should have dropped ten.”
We only had 1 more atomic bomb available when Japan surrendered. Maybe we were saving it for use on the Russian Army. They declared war on Japan in between the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings and gobbled up the Kurile Islands.
