HSU Republicans appeal to university to change nondiscrimination policy

Some of Humboldt State University's student Republicans feel like minorities on campus, and are asking the university to change its nondiscrimination policy to include ideological views.

”The point is that everyone should be getting a chance to be heard,” said Jerilyn Gashi, president of the HSU College Conservatives, formerly the College Republicans. “Too often, the definition of diversity ends at a certain list. It should be extended to everyone, Republicans included.”

The club is asking HSU to amend the university's nondiscrimination policy to include a clause prohibiting discrimination on the basis of ideological view or affiliation with major political parties.

”I am a minority on this campus,” Gashi said. “I routinely get shot down when I'm trying to speak.”

Gashi said she personally experiences harassment because of her political affiliation every week.

While most professors do not openly mock her in class and do give her time to voice her opinion, Gashi said the bigger problem is her classmates, who, she said, don't have the maturity to respect a different opinion.

”The campus is always updating and revising policies and part of what spurs those updates is often students' comments, given that students are very involved with running the campus,” HSU spokesman Frank Whitlatch said.

Whitlatch added that since all of HSU's policies have to be consistent with California State University polices, there may be some complications.

He said the president's office has provided the club with different ways to approach the issue, including contacting the human resources department, which oversees the policy, or working with a campus ombudsman to work out any issues with individuals on campus.

Gashi said it wasn't one specific incident that spurred the club into action, but the campus's overall tone towards conservatives.

While she knew HSU was a liberal school, Gashi, a music student from Colorado, said she came here to study with a specific professor.

”I didn't know quite what I was getting myself into,” she said.

Gashi said she recognizes that most public college campuses are more politically left-leaning.

“It's fine as long as it doesn't interfere in education,” she said, adding that professors are letting their political views seep into the classroom.

”I see it as a real case of hypocrisy, because at the same time we are promoting diversity and listening to people of different backgrounds, but they don't want to hear about my background,” Gashi said.

They're very young if they think "diversity" has anything to do with treating everyone equally. Diversity is a form of racism in which certain groups get special treatment at the expense of other groups. And guess what, young and naive Republicans, you are the ones that progressive liberals want to see pushed to the bottom.

Your first lesson in life. Political Correctness isn't about tolerance or diversity, it is about criminalizing certain thoughts and ideologies.

All animals are equal, some are more equal than others, Comrade.

This is the beginnig of the new wave - RIGHT ON! Now we need to go one step further and expose the left as racist, hatred bigot who hate little innocent white children because they are white. We are on our way, as time passes we must come up with the playbook that puts them on the defense.
