MADRID (Reuters) - The Queen of Spain drew criticism Friday after she was quoted as condemning gay marriage, gay pride marches and abortion in an upcoming biography.
"If these people want to live together, dress as grooms and get married, they might have the right to do so or not, depending on the laws of their countries. But they shouldn't call it marriage, because it isn't," Queen Sofia was quoted as saying.
"There are many possible names: social contract, contract of union," she said in extracts from "La Reina Muy de Cerca" (The Queen Up Close) previewed Thursday in the daily El Pais....
The Royal Palace said the Greek-born queen had been misquoted.
"The supposed comments which, anyway, were made in a private sphere, do not exactly match the opinions expressed by Her Majesty The Queen," it said in a statement.
Spain legalized gay marriage in 2005.
In the book, the Queen, who married King Juan Carlos in 1962, also criticized abortion and gay pride parades....
The chief spokesman for the opposition conservative Popular Party was unhappy with the Queen's comments, saying the royal family should not wade into politics.
"I think that the King, the Queen, if they are there for anything, it is to be like the flag, and we see the flag as meeting its role in official acts but not making public statements," Esteban Gonzalez Pons told Telemadrid.
Pons said that although the Queen's views may have offended half of Spaniards, another half supported them, particularly elderly Catholics like Sofia, who will turn 70 Sunday.
Pons's party also argued against calling gay unions marriage and several Popular Party mayors have refused to marry gay couples.

On the other hand, I still marvel over her husband, King Juan Carlos, telling Chavez to "shut up" in 2007.
The gays have fits about everything...
It really doesn’t matter. Somehow the First Amendment now means that you don’t dare speak about certain “verbotten” topics...
Sounds like the Spanish monarchy knows what’s what.
The Queen has, what do you call it in Spanish, cajones?(sp?)

Draws ire? Who gives a rats ass what the homosexual agenda says. The statement from the Queen was one of correct.
God bless Queen Sofia of Spain!
That is spelled “verboten.”
God Save the Queen of Spain! She’s right. As a married woman, I have risked my very life to have children, and my husband has risked everything to support his family. No gay couple can say the same. They’re just good friends if anything!
Exactly what I though when I read this. My first thought was who criticized, but Reuters actually found someone to quote who would "criticize" the Queen.
Now, would Reuters say someone "drew criticism" if they uttered something pro-homo? Would they spend any time trying to find someone to quote as criticizing the statement?
Methinks not!
Maybe I'll just make a "God Save Queen Sophia" sticker.
Queen Sofia is a member of the now-ousted royal family of Greece, which was of Danish descent. I believe Prince Philip, the husband of Elizabeth II, is a relative.
It is time that we make it clear that homosexuality is a disorder. It is not the way things are supposed to be. This is true no matter what the cause: genetic, or volitional, or a bit of both. It is still abnormal. Anyone with a bit of anatomical sense, or any competent plumber can see that homosexuality is not the norm, not part of the plan, and therefore is a disorder.
We should compare it with any other disorder. I do not get all flustered about homosexuals: I do not hate them, and I have found some to be honorable people in spite of their problem. A few are bright and generous. However, the same could be said of alcoholics. Alcoholism is also clearly a disorder. Some people inherit the tendency, some maybe just form bad habits. Some alcoholics are charming and talented. But they cannot claim that society should indulge them by considering them normal, although they are frequently as much in denial about their condition as is the typical homosexual.
The best cure for alcoholism is not really a permanent cure, but just total abstinence from alcohol. It is very difficult for the alcoholic, but many motivated people manage. Surely a homosexual can do the same: abstain. I am sure that several people I have known were in this situation, and yet managed to stay clear of the “gay lifestyle.”
Like alcoholism, the “gay lifestyle” has terrible implications for the rest of society, including health implications.
If you think about this, I am confident that you can call to mind other disorders which are parallel with the two I have cited.
Thus, I say, everything that the Queen of Spain said is correct. Her name, I note, means wise (in Greek), and so she is.
And the laws of Spain are wrong in trying to make gay hook-ups equivalent to marriage. That attitude is contrary to plain fact, and is a symptom of insanity. After all, what we call it when a person is unable to apprehend things as they are.
But what’s new? We live in an age of massive social decay. It is as if alien beings had introduced a viral brain disease which is spreading through the Western world. I see that in this country it is most prevalent in the coastal red states (you know, the ones that the newspapers and other media call “blue”).
Well said. However cajones are big boxes. she has cojones. slang for balls, and not the kind you throw.
Too many queens, eh?
Nobody EXPECTS the Spanish condemnation!
Seems like you cannot say this in America anymore without risking your job, etc.
Is this weird Spaniard suggesting that half of Spain are perverts?
ire of who?
this is about as real as that MSNBC divaman saying “some say” to cover his own opinions.
These are just reporters complaining.
That would be cojones. "Cajones" means large boxes or crates.
Queen Sofia is a very strong and opinionated lady, and it is largely due to her diplomatic skills and force of personality that her husband is sitting on the throne of Spain and not an exile, like many of Europe’s royalty — including her own birth family.
And yes, she is first cousin (once removed) to Prince Phillip, Queen Elizabeth’s husband.
