AP Poll Portrays McCain Backers as 'Glum'; Obama Supporters as 'Gleeful'
NewsBusters ^ | November 1, 2008 | P.J. Gladnick

Posted on 11/02/2008 1:45:13 AM PST by Zakeet

Have you noticed a rash of news stories the past few weeks with the theme that John McCain supporters are depressed because they think he has almost no chance? The real purpose of these stories is to demoralize McCain supporters in a effort to make them them think things are so hopeless for their candidate that they need not bother to wait on lines at the polling stations since the Barack Obama landslide is inevitable. And now the Associated Press is using their own poll to emphasize this theme of hopelessness among McCain supporters as you can see by the very title, "AP poll shows Obama backers gleeful, McCain's glum," of their story today (emphasis mine):

WASHINGTON – That smiling guy walking down the street? Odds are he's a Barack Obama backer. The grouchy looking one? Don't ask, and don't necessarily count on him to vote next week, either.

Notice how the AP is promoting the idea of McCain supporters staying home because things are supposedly going so poorly for their candidate?

Supporters of John McCain, long less enthusiastic than Obama's, have become increasingly glum about the presidential campaign in recent weeks, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll released Saturday. Their feelings have turned more negative during a period that has seen Obama, the Democratic senator from Illinois, take a firm lead in many polls.

Obama's backers have retained a higher level of excitement. One expert says the contrasting moods could affect how likely the two candidates' supporters are to vote on Election Day, possibly dampening McCain's turnout while boosting Obama's.

[Snip]

More McCain supporters also feel angry and bored, while Obama's are likelier to say they are proud and hopeful.

Yes, Barack Obama backers are oh so happy and gleeful. Skipping down the street with big smiles on their faces. Meanwhile those who support McCain are ready to OD on bottles of Prozac. At least this is the way AP seems to be portraying it.

[Snip]

The AP should just drop all pretense and go all out in discouraging McCain supporters from voting. They should send sound trucks into neighborhoods all over the country blasting: "ALL YOU McCAIN SUPPORTERS! GIVE UP ALL HOPE NOW! OUR POLLS SHOW YOUR CANDIDATE LOSING IN A LANDSLIDE SO DON'T EVEN BOTHER TO VOTE! YOU HEAR US? PLEASE DON'T VOTE!!!"

As noted and discussed earlier on Free Republic here, this drivel by A-Pee deserves special recognition as one of the most shameful examples of MSM bias in what is already a record setting campaign.

However, for the benefit of those who missed the earlier article, I thought this summary by NewsBusters did an excellent job of summarizing both the nature of the original story and the reason why it is so absurd.

The idiots in the press only wish we were glum. They continue to try to deflate us. I pray to God “The McCain Backers” get out and vote!

This crap is crazy. I’ve got a question to everyone who reads this here on this new thread. Even in your heart of hearts you absolutely believe that Mac will lose, would that stop you from voting? Does anyone here really think that well, not me, no, their BS isn’t gonna affect me, but, yeah, ok, it’s probably gonna have an effect on a lot of other people. Doesn’t that sound ridiculous to you, once you think about it?

I’m remembering back when Bob Dole was running for Prez and I never thought he would win. Never. But I’ve never stayed home for an election. Never. Never will. Never. I just can’t see Republicans doing this as a group of voters who are very motivated and have always voted. We as Americans cherish our vote. I don’t think much of anything can keep regular voters from voting. Yes, in 06 they did so partially, but that was a message to deliver, that was a temper tantrum. This is different.

If they gave out Pulitzer Prizes for the most offensive hit pieces in this election, this stinker would snag it.

That YouTube clip floating around of the Obama voter who is ecstatic that Obama is going to fill her gas tank and pay her mortgage must be an example of one of the gleeful morons they are talking about.

Freepers..it’s the AP. We already know they are in the tank for BO so their BS should be expected to go higher with 2 days to go before election day.

“Yes, in 06 they did so partially, but that was a message to deliver, that was a temper tantrum. This is different.”

That temper tantrum cost us the Senate and Congress. I never understood how people stayed home and not vote to teach the Republicans a lesson, when in reality it taught us a lesson, the Democrats mean to hurt the taxpayers of America and they mean business. They now have a true puppet in “The Chosen One” and they will not stop there until the Constitution is shredded.

I can see Dave Chappelle in an ice cream truck with white lips,
driving down the road yelling this over the loudspeaker.

Let’s see who’s glum on November 5th. Hope that all of these pollsters and presstitutes either work on the first floor or have windows that don’t open.

There was an article several days ago on FOX, I don't think it was ever posted here, that told of the Obama campaigns efforts to tone down supporters “expectations” for change after “the One” was elected. They were concerned that the elation would turn to disillusionment. I took it to mean that even they were starting to realize the numbers just were not adding up for his gigantic spending plans.

Associated Press, the most egregious of the Criminal Media, which is a term I coined over 13 years ago, when the MSM were busy covering up the crimes of the Clinton Administration. But over the last 13 years the MSM has become so blatantly dishonest, so outrageous in their use of the double standard, that I believe it is time to bring them to justice, whether that means filing criminal charges against them, or filing civil class action suits for damages. A talented lawyer could find multiple grounds for either course of action. They hide behind the First Amendment, which was never conceived for the kind of practices they engage in.

We've put up with this for too long. It's gone from merely frustrating to infuriating to downright life threatening. How much longer do we sit around and let them get away with it?

I've never understood that either. THIS election would not be nearly so dangerous if we weren't at such a disadvantage in the House and Senate. They wanted to punish Republicans, but they totally ignored the fact that the Dems were much worse. It defied any explanation.

As typical of liberals, the media think they are much smarter than we are and therefore, they publish crap like this.

See, they think we'll read it and start feeling glum, when in reality, the emotionally healthy and steadfast among us merely laugh at their posturing.

Look closely at any Democrat crowd - anti-war protest, Michael Moore screening, media newsroom, welfare line, university professors' lounge, etc. and you'll see very glum faces. Faces that are so used to harboring glum expressions that they look permanently etched.

The Effect of the Partisan Press on U.S. House Elections, 1800-1820

http://www.allacademic.com//meta/p_mla_apa_research_citation/2/6/6/1/9/pages266195/p266195-1.php

In the contemporary era, it has become fashionable to claim that the national media “tilt”
left or right in the political realm depending upon one’s ideological perspective. Indeed, some
suggest that journalists assume an intervening role in shaping the political agenda as a result of
the amount or degree of coverage of certain political events. While it is difficult to find objective
evidence of bias in the contemporary media, we turn to the past to gain additional leverage on
this important debate. In particular, we revisit the era of the “partisan press” where newspapers
were really the only source of news for American voters and they were typically operated by one
of the two major party organizations. Using a new dataset linking the geographic location of
partisan newspapers during the early nineteenth century with recently collected electoral data,

we investigate the effect of partisan newspapers on the outcome of U.S. House races.
The results confirm our theoretical expectations and offer definitive evidence of media “bias” in the context of historical elections.

------------------------------------------------------

Sorry I didn't have time to clean it up, or read the paper entirely (28 pages),
but the example made is that bias has been the standard for the media
in America for centuries.

/Salute

Notes from the real world: I work in a very public place where I come in direct contact with people of all ages and types.........I am getting quite a bit of the sly "I voted McCain"...quiet and stealthy....

Do not be surprized to wake up with a President McCain by a clear margin.....I am convinced the democrats are voting for McCain....

This is why it is not showing in the polls
