For John McCain, the elephant in the room is still George W. Bush (Breathtaking Hate)

For John McCain, the elephant in the room is still George W. Bush Peter Gelzinis Sunday, November 2, 2008 - In their final debate, John McCain glared at Barack Obama and said that if he was so eager to take on George W. Bush, he should have run four years ago.

When the political coroners perform their autopsies of the 2008 campaign, they may conclude that McCain’s best zinger was actually his most poignant epitaph. For the very question he put before Obama is the one history will ask of this old soldier:

Why didn’t McCain challenge George Bush four years ago?

For a self-proclaimed maverick who saw the Iraq war rapidly descending into chaos four years ago under Donald Rumsfeld, why didn’t McCain challenge the prevailing network of old-boy Washington insiders in spectacular fashion?

Sure, he would’ve been forced to wage a third-party insurgency. And yes, it might have put John Kerry in the White House. But John McCain would certainly have become a maverick for all seasons, not to mention all political persuasions. And there would have been no talk about a “George W. McCain.”

Gramps McCain has been living off the 8-year-old memory of a straight-talking guy who saw his first presidential fling savaged by Karl Rove and friends in South Carolina. But the truth is, when Bush’s thugs flattened the tires on the Straight Talk Express back in 2000, all the air went out of McCain’s maverick spirit.

He’s been playing it safe ever since. Sarah Palin wasn’t a bold move. She was a bon bon to the same inbred Republican base McCain had the audacity to defy eight years earlier.

It’s true, Joe Lieberman never would have looked so good in a skirt and high heels. But he could have made the maverick argument with a helluva lot more conviction, eloquence and gravitas than Caribou Barbie. Ah, but then the likes of El Rushbo and Sean Hannity would’ve declared a fatwah on a McCain-Lieberman ticket.

So, as the end nears, McCain is stuck with yet another of Sarah’s stupefying ad-libs. Seems she thinks that the “mainstream media’s” description of her negative rants about Obama constitute, in her pretty mind, a threat on the First Amendment. Somewhere, “professor” Irwin Corey is wetting his pants laughing.

Recent leaks out of the McCain-Palin camp call to mind a famous lyric from a Cole Porter song about the love affair that was “too hot not to cool down.” Seems the bloom is off the rose and the only thing Palin is campaigning for at the moment is herself in 2012. And those looking to sabotage her are agents of that other pretty-but-failed candidate, Mitt Romney.

We will never know how much better, or worse, John McCain might have fared had he challenged George Bush four years ago.

But one thing is for sure: It would have been impossible for Barack Obama to tie the anchor of George Bush around John McCain’s neck as he’s done for the last two years.

Isn't that charming?

Does this MoonBat have a clue? Bush is not running again.

John McCain = not George Bush

The One? Even he isn't Bush.

Sarah? Doesn't look like President Bush to me...

Further Clue for the Clueless?

The Left Has It All Wrong - It’s not McCain who would be Bush’s third term, but Obama.

Because that's not how the game works? F'n brainless liberals. History wouldn't be stupid enough to ask the question, unless it was a liberal historian of course.

The dumbass again shows his ignorance. Senator McCain was a SAILOR, NOT a SOLDIER, you idiot! The mind numbed prick couldn't even get that right. How old is this guy? 12?

I voted for McCain.
I do not like McCain.
I love Saracuda.
NOw McCain thinks he got screwed in 2000 by G.W. Bush. He did whatever he could to go against President Bush over the years to tweak the president.
It would be quite ironic if a very unpopular G.W. Bush drug down votes for Republicans and caused McCain to lose this one too.

Surprise. Surprise. From the author's Oct. 8 column.:
"I do feel bad for Mitt Romney ...
The Republicans won’t be calling Mitt out of the bullpen.

Yet another member of the Mitt Romney("Attack Gov.Palin") fan club.
