SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc. will fire at least 1,500 workers to cope with a crumbling economy that dented its third-quarter profit and turned up the heat on the Internet company's management as investors stew over a missed opportunity to sell to Microsoft Corp. for $47.5 billion.
The purge outlined Tuesday represents a 10 percent reduction in Yahoo's payroll of about 15,000 employees. It's the second time in nine months that Yahoo has resorted to mass layoffs in what so far has been an ineffectual effort to rebound from a financial funk that has left its stock price near a 5 1/2-year low.

yeah. step in right direction
Crap...i’d better backup my yahoo email archive somewhere.
I’m somehow finding it difficult to muster up a lot of sympathy.
That’s what ya get, ya liberal Yahoos!
Once again here is an example of inept management making bad decisions with other people money. Undoubtedly, at the end of the day, Jerry Yang will walk away with millions in a golden parachute while stock holders are holding worthless pieces of paper.
Imagine being one of the laid-off; you have stock that could have been sold at a premium to MS. Now, it's worth half value and you're out of a job.
That sucks.
Yahoo’s management decision to pass up the $47.5 BILLION offer - was verification of their amateurish and inept business sense.
They refused sirloin steak, wanting prime rib - and will now dine on hot dogs.
Just like the song tells us: “You’ve got to know when to hold em and know when to fold em”.....
I deal with Yahoo and Google everyday (part of my job) and Yahoo employees are incompetents, IMHO. They should fire their entire search marketing staff and start from scratch. They have glitches in their systems that have gone uncorrected for months. I imagine many advertisers have gotten tired of trying to negotiate the problems Yahoo creates.
Note to Yahoo execs: keep dissing Palin and watch your company stick so low in the pipes that Joe the Plumber himself won’t be able to flush you out.
boo.f`n.hoo !
I'm getting tired of being bombarded with singles ads when accessing my mail. It's bad enough that they have a "married and looking" option in the profile, but I marked "married and not looking" and still get the ads.
Yes I think Microsoft will pick up the Yahoos with a huge savings from the previous buyout attempt. They must be licking their chops tonight.
I hope they hack the bottom ten percent of their employees: miltant homosexuals and effeminate metrosexuals.
Can’t help you there. We do advertising on their search engine, so my rep deals with placement of ads on search engines, etc.
They’re not responsive to complaints anyway, that’s one of my main problems with them...you can complain about a problem and 6 months later, nothing has changed.
It was really forgiving, though. We're back to being friends.
