When is the last time a bishop's statement on abortion resulted in several days of protest from pro-abortion Catholics? The joint statement issued last Friday by Bishop Kevin Vann of Fort Worth and Bishop Kevin Farrell of Dallas has done just that. No doubt the forceful clarity of the bishops' message elicited the outcry.
The protests began on Sunday when the statement was read from the pulpit by Rev. Tony Ruiz, pastor of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in downtown Dallas. Some two-dozen parishioners walked out and went to the local media to lodge their complaints about "political endorsements." The next day, the Dallas Morning News carried the story on the front page of its Metro section. "The silver lining was that the article contained a link to the bishops' statement," said Karen Garnett, executive director of the Catholic Pro-Life Committee, Respect Life Ministry of the Diocese of Dallas.

As a practicing Catholic, I believe that it is time for some discipline to be meted out, such as excommunication.

I think the Pope should dis-communicate these bishops. If I worshiped in any of the churches led by these bishops, I'd be looking for a new church.

No one can call themselves a Catholic when they disobey the Church's teaching on abortion.

Roman Catholic dogma is pretty crystal clear in regards to abortion.
Any Catholic who disagrees with the dogma is more than free to go, I’m sure they can find any number of liberal churches that are copasetic with abortion.
Why would these liberals stay when they just don’t disagree with the dogma, but are actually offended by it?

As a practicing Catholic, I believe that it is time for some discipline to be meted out, such as excommunication. If you want to be technical about it, they excommunicate themselves and it's up to them and their conscience to resolve the issue.
For formal excommunication, there needs be a formal crime or charge, such as schism. There was a formal writ of excommunication in the archdiocesan paper here last week and that jumped out at me. In that specific case, the charge was schism (and rightly so, IMO). I don't know that this is enough of a crime other than misrepresentation which is more of a pastoral issue than willful, obstinate ignoring a bishop's rightful request regarding canon law.
That being said, maybe it's time for those of us who follow the teachings of the church to protest the protest and publicly let the world know that the dissenters do not speak for us.

Absolutely, the Catholic Church is solidly against abortion, contrary to the ideas of Mrs. Pelosi that it is a matter which hasn’t been settled decisively by the RCC.
To: antiunion person
The bishops weren’t protesting, the pro-abortion ‘Catholics’ were.

Excommunicate them on the spot. Watch the demons freak out at being rebuked.
And please, before anyone tells me that by their views they have already excommunicated themselves, give it a rest. The church can officially declare a person excommunicated, and THAT is what I am saying must start being done. No kidding they are out of communion with God. The church leaders can officially declare them out. THAT must start being done. This is the only way these people will see there are real consequences to their immoral views.

Notes:
-
Previous #23 has been removed. Bishop Joseph Gossman of Raleigh, NC is actually the bishop emeritus, and the new bishop, Michael Burbidge has not, to my knowledge, made a personal statement.
-
Previous #16 has also been removed, it was an erroneous duplication of current #13.
-
#26 was added September 10th, although he published his column September 6th
