Sarah Palin has inspired a lot of things during her meteoric political rise: Conservative euphoria. Liberal angst. Political uncertainty. Media scrutiny. Uncanny Tina Fay satire. And she's certain to inspire a fair number of lookalikes this election eve Halloween holiday.
But now the GOP VP nominee and Alaska governor is serving as inspiration for one of the most unusual items this political season: A new wig style for ultra-Orthodox Jewish women.

I have an ultra-Orthodox friend who alternates between wigs and headscarves to cover her head. She’s a Dem but she says Obama scares her. She might be interested in this article, tee hee.

What does the “Jewish” slant come from, besides left field? How in the world so?
Weird. Adding ethnic comments to sexism?

Ultra Orthodox Jewish women must cover their hair in public.
Many wear wigs to do this.
Some like Sarah Palin's hair style, and want wigs in that style.
Capeesh?

What pray tell is Jewish about this wig with this hairstyle?
Why is this even a reference.
There is an anti-semetic outfit claiming Jewish heritage for Sarah Palin (which would be wonderful, but is apparently not true). In light of that, this seems really peculiar.

Klein told Checkpoint Jerusalem that sales of the Palin wigs had "far exceeded" projections, but he wouldn't say if they expected to sell two, ten, a hundred or what.Everytime I read something like this I get a warm fuzzy feeling that McCain/Palin ticket is going to do very well in the election.
To: Max in Utah
Okay. But what makes a wig “Jewish?” Doesn’t this wig fit women’s heads of a variety of ethnicities?
Either the style/wig is popular or it isn’t.

From the article:
Feeding on the intense interest in Palin, an ultra-Orthodox wig shop in Brooklyn is selling a specially-designed "Sarah Palin wig."
An ultra-Orthodox wig shop is most certainly Jewish.
The shop's customers are probably almost all Jewish.
Therefore, a wig created by a Jewish shop for Jewish customers could logically be called a "jewish wig."
But you can disagree if you want to split hairs.

This isn’t that difficult. The wig is being sold from a website that serves primary orthodox Jewish women. These women MUST cover their heads in public (either w/a scarf or a wig). The article suggests that a style quite similar to Gov. Palin’s natural hair style, has been popular. Understand now? This is no different than the sell out of the Naughty Monkey shoes (Double Dare red pumps) that Gov. Palin wore at her introduction in Ohio. Its a good thing...people (well, women) are enamoured of her style.

according to Jewish law, a married Jewish woman must cover her hair just as a man wears a yarmulke to cover his head.

Jewish women covered their heads back in the olden days, even covered their bodies pretty much for modesty’s sake. There must have been a religious connotation to it, because St. Paul instructed Christian women in the New Testament to not pray unto the Lord without a headcovering, that it is a shame for women to pray to the Lord without a covering. I cover my head with a scarf when I pray, and like the custom personally. A lot of women argue that the hair IS the covering, but that train of thought does not work out logically when it is thought through to its logical conclusion. If the hair were the covering for women, then the admonition for men NOT to cover their heads when they pray would logically conclude that men with lots of hair on their heads would need to shave off their hair, IF hair is the covering.

Not all orthodox Jewish women use wigs.
Many use scarves or hats instead.
Many shave their heads in summer and wear a light wig on their shaved head.

I know a very, very few women from the Old Jerusalem sect who shave their heads, but most do not. It's just creepy.
Keeping your hair very short for comfort is another story.

Maybe not "shave" shave with a blade, but use the old #2 on the Osterizer.
I'm not sure why it's "creepy" - although I gues it could be uncomfortably reminiscent of how the death camps groomed their prisoners, male and female.

I really hate wearing a sheitel, I prefer a hat any day. For years I attended a modern Orthodox synagogue where none of the women covered their heads. But as a “shlucha” I am expected to wear a sheitel. Now I see a whole younger generation all wear sheitels, which was very unusual 30 years ago.

In her home state, retailers are looking to capitalize on the governor's patronage. Just before she was offered the nomination two weeks ago, Gov. Palin went shopping at Out of the Closet, an Anchorage-based secondhand store, with her 14-year-old daughter Willow and her infant son Trig. She picked up a Juicy Couture coat for Willow and a tweed blazer for herself by Escada, which is one of her favorite labels, a saleswoman says. She buys at second-hand clothing stores.
She really is Everywoman.
