The NAACP will have lawyers targeting 750 precincts around the nation on Election Day to help address complaints about possible voter disenfranchisement, the organization's new president said Saturday.
Benjamin Jealous, who took the helm of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People on Sept. 15, said volunteer lawyers have already been addressing complaints about voter registration problems. On Election Day, lawyers will be sent to the 750 precincts where there has been a history of voter discrimination, Jealous said at the state NAACP convention.
Jealous also said he hopes that Democratic nominee Barack Obama's growing popularity will aid the civil rights organization. Obama's background as a community organizer and civil rights attorney could help as the NAACP targets quality education and other equality issues, he said.
But Jealous said Obama's rise has also occasionally led people to question whether the 99-year-old organization is still relevant.
"If Obama is elected, won't colored people have advanced as far as they can advance?" Jealous recalled being asked.
"The condition of the grassroots" will determine whether the NAACP can shut its doors, not the advancement of a single man, said Jealous, the youngest-ever leader of the group at age 35.
The presidential primary campaign highlighted the difference between many Hispanic voters and black voters. Hispanic voters helped give Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton a win in Texas, temporarily stalling the Obama campaign's momentum before he eventually secured the nomination.
Asked whether black and Latino leaders should try to help bridge the gap, Jealous said he's already met with the head of the National Council of La Raza.

So do I! I say block off their neighborhoods and let them burn — don’t send in the police or fire and put them in harm’s way.
No matter who wins and who loses...there will be race riots.
Not sure which race will kick them off......
I have been saying for a while, now, that white-folks need a NAAWP. It will be a necessity if Obama gets elected.
These anti-American groups will be oozing out of the woodwork from now until election day. Their Manchild is going to be president or the crap is going to hit the fan. They’ve invested a lot of money purchasing the Oval Office.
Benjamin Jealous? Most likely he is also jealous of Caucasian, Asian, Hispanic and Jewish successes that greatly surpass those of his constiuents.
Me too. Annie get your gun.
you’re echoing the snakehead.
"Ah do declare, after registering for the 15th time, they tol' me ah cudn't do it no more!
I saw this coming. I also saw it in person in ‘04 in Jacksonville. The NAACP lawyers were out there at the poll with their fancy, pimptimidation suits and cameras...and left because the only voters being intimidated were Bush/Cheney voters. That wasn’t important to them, even though I had numerous black voters give me and my group (B/C volunteers) secret thumbs-up or telling me they couldn’t tell anyone they were voting for Bush for fear of repurcussions. One woman refused a B/C bumper sticker because she said her whole bumper would be ripped off her car.
It’s racism, I tell you! See, this sistuh was turned away by the racists at five different precinks on election day. At the othuh four precinks she was OK and was able ta vote. But the ohtuh five, racists all!
Gee, are they watching the real cheaters?
I thought they had the fraud market all wrapped up in a nice little acorn.
Guess it never hurts to cover All the bases.
The NAACP looks a lot like ACORN & ACORN looks a lot like the NAACP!
There are bumperstickers out that say "Obama or Revolution".
Yeah, if Barry loses ... it’s ... it’s ... it’s ... RACISM!!!! God, I’m so tired of their crap! Oh, did you see a couple of days ago that Farrakan called Obama “The Messiah”? True. Check it out. It’s out in the open now.
gosh, isn’t that comforting!
Obama could not answer this because his party's platform and he himself is for mass legalization of these invaders.
There you have it. This is how McCain gets to swoop up massive segments of the Undecideds.
Do YOU want him to do this?
Do YOU want him to win the election?
Does HE want to win the election?
I believe I’ll take the revolution. Lock......and load........fire at will.
Fraud for me none for thee!
Slavery was in violation of the principles of our founding and could have easily been a distant memory had the Democrat controlled congress not overturned all GOP initiated laws by the end of the 1860’s.
What an appropriate name
Memo to self. Must buy more ammo!
“I read not to long ago, that the U.N. will have 300 observers watching the election this November.”
And who authorized the UN to observe US elections?
I regard that as an outrage.
Think of all the other countries where it could go observe elections if it wants to see some real fraud at work :
Zimbawe, North Korea, Egypt, etc. etc.
I remember the race riots of the 60's. Most of it was fomented by small groups and not large masses of angry blacks. This will probably be the case this time if anything happens. People tend to be more 'talk' than 'walk' when it comes to public violence.
Groups to watch would be the Nation of Islam (which has been very quiet so far) the Uhuru's, and any group that uses "People's" in its title.
Am I among the few who find this to be the most rank hypocricy? ACLU and the NAACP don’t find voter problems, they cause voter problems!
Racism? Hmmmm. I took this from a mostly black blog/board where they were discussing the election. A white woman had just said (referring to voting for Obama because he was black) Well, I may as well vote for McCain because hes white, then, huh?
Heres the response: You know it aint the same.
Us blacks have been slaves for fo hundred years. This is the first time we have come close to gaining any sort of power over the white man and the mexicans and the asians etc.
It is different man.
