The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now is under pressure from the UNM College Democrats and Republicans alike for allegedly registering voters illegally.
According to an article in the Albuquerque Journal on Sept. 17, the Bernalillo County Clerk's Office notified prosecutors in state and federal law enforcement agencies that it had received fraudulent registration cards from ACORN.
An investigation of the methods used by ACORN to register students and community members will begin once the prosecutors decide who will take the lead.
Matthew Henderson, ACORN's head organizer for New Mexico, said he has not heard from prosecutors.
"I have not heard any charges against ACORN," Henderson said. "ACORN has registered over 75,000 people in New Mexico since January, and we run very closely with the County Clerk's Office procedures."
Sean DeBuck, a member of NMPIRG, which also registers students to vote, said there are a lot of guidelines to follow in the process, but they are relatively simple.
"There are rules that are set in place that have to do with time restraints, but when it comes to fraud, those rules are pretty hard to mess up," he said.
Lee Drake, president of the College Democrats, said ACORN has been active on college campuses around the country.
"ACORN is a group that is nonpartisan and contracts out to groups that want to do mass voter registrations," he said.
Drake said he has heard complaints from many people who have dealt with members of ACORN.
"A lot of the reports that we get at College Democrats regarding ACORN's practices are dismal," Drake said. "There are some professors that are coming to me and saying that their children are being registered Republican without their child's consent."
Vicky Scheidler, a former worker for ACORN, said that although the company has the right idea, the people it hires do not always do what is best.
Drake said College Democrats have been working to have ACORN evicted from campus.
Debbie Morris, student activities director, said that because none of the complaints have been proven true, UNM will not remove ACORN from campus.
"All of the accusations are just accusations, and I have no legal ability to ask them to not be on campus, because everything is just alleged," she said.
Drake said the College Democrats and other student organizations have been helping students register to vote, and the faulty registrations through ACORN are a major setback.
"We students - either through College Democrats, NMPIRG or grassroots movements - have been registering student voters left and right, and we get the job done," Drake said. "There is no way to get a hold of the students who have been registered by ACORN and let them know that even though they think they will be able to vote, they may not be able to."
ping again.
Check key word ACORN for more.
Good God. These vermin are everywhere. And Obama paid them (clandestinely) over $800K too. I’ll bet you find that Assholerod and his cronies kicked in alot more than that as well.
Voter fraud here in NM! I am shocked!
Money quote.
“There are some professors that are coming to me and saying that their children are being registered Republican without their child’s consent.”
I call “Bee Ess” on this one!
Maybe some of these profs have Republican voting kids who say “ACORN musta done it!”
this punk writes like a 3rd grader
NM Ping
I agree with the dems about fraud.. What we should do to avoid fraud is to require everyone to show ID and declare party affiliation at the time they vote.
Children voting?
ACORN involved in voter fraud? I am shocked!
Notice that the student voter group (a democrat group!) bemoans the fact that “students may not be able to vote” and NOT the fact that illegal registrations have taken place trying to get the students to illegally register.
Bookmarked.
You got it! The RATS in NM are trying to distance themselves from ACORN and the fraud that ACORN is perpetrating. However, the RATS in NM didn’t need any help. They had already worked at perfecting their own practices. In 2000, I registered to vote via mail, and I got my voter registration card 2 weeks after the election. They had my registration, but they claimed it was nonexistent. It had “Republican” on the registration, so it mysteriously was lost and then found again two weeks later. Meanwhile, the early ballots that were cast were counted via computer. As they were counted, one vote for Bush equalled two or three votes for Gore. When the total voters did not match the number of votes cast, some reporter asked why that was so. hah. The computer was programmed to count that way. Thank goodness there was a paper backup and that the ballots could be recounted accurately. And I’m not even getting into the mysterious votes that turned up a week after the election that put Algore over the top for NM.
Bubba pardoned two New Mexican women on his last day in office. They had been convicted of vote fraud.
The good news is that this has been discovered before the election.
The bad news is that it seems to be so widespread that there will be bogus votes counted.
I hope there are numerous indictments of those who are ruining this country.
But already they can't seem to get rid of 8200 dead registered voters on the rolls in Connecticut. They are turning up everywhere.
November 4th will be a reincarnation of “Day of the Dead”!
Yer giving me the shivers. ;o)
Scary times, though.

Your system sounds perfectly logical and fair and efficient....which is why the democrats would never support such a straightforward, simple operation. If all US states operated as you do, we probably wouldn’t have our current democrat-run senate.
In the US, it’s not just a matter of honest poll workers catching fraudulent voters. Unfortunately, in many of the precincts, the poll watchers and the workers are themselves orchestrating or abetting the fraud.
Lee Drake, president of the College Democrats "ACORN is a group that is nonpartisan and contracts out to groups that want to do mass voter registrations," he said....Drake said he has heard complaints from many people "There are some professors that are coming to me and saying that their children are being registered Republican without their child's consent."
Rest assured though the claim will probably reappear in other articles soon to come but without attribution.
I have started showing my drivers license every time I vote. It is my personal protest. I’ve explained to my poll workers why I’m doing it and they seem very supportive. I’m sure they understand what’s at stake as well, or better, than any of us do.

Good post potlatch!
An “example” must be made of 1-2-3...
The current situation has an Obama paid group filing thousands and thousands of fake and fictitious registrations which will confuse and muck-up the voter rolls in cities that just don't have enough people to see if Mickey Mouse actually lives at 123 Main Street along with three hundred other characters. They will send homeless people to cast provisional ballots (even after they registered in multiple districts) and submit absentee ballots, and do whatever it takes to make the system look broken. They have people bussed from district to district and buss them back when the volunteer poll clerks switch off to other volunteers so they can assume the identity of a dead person and vote again.
It would be nice if we had parties that didn't have to cheat but allowed the actual, eligible voters to decide. But they refuse and the more they make the system look broken, cry racism, sexism, homophobia, the more the undermine confidence in the system. Similar to what they're doing to the mortgage system. They call anyone that wants to fix it racist because they want people that can actually afford homes to actually own them. This is all happening under the "blind" eyes of the media who are rooting for Obama. People in this country are ready to grab pitchforks and storm DC because the simple act of requiring people show identification would end all of this but they don't want it to end because if it did, they would be out of power in four years.
