Madeleine Talbott, a leader with Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), said she felt justified in trying to lift a table to get past police who were guarding the doors. Six protesters charged after attempt to storm city council tying BY JIM ALLEN Daily Herald SUiff Writer Six people were arrested Wednesday as 200 protesters attempted to storm the Chicago City Council chambers to urge passage of a "living- wage" ordinance. The protesters went to the meeting to lobby for the plan requiring all city contractors to pay employees a minimum of $7.83 an hour. But after waiting for hours near the metal detector, the group was told just before the meeting that the public seating area was full. Protesters responded by pushing the metal detector and an adjoining table out of their way. They then backed police against the doors to the council chambers and jammed the hallway, blocking late-arriving aldermen and city staff. Four of the protesters were charged with mob action and disorderly conduct after trying to break past a makeshift barricade at a side entrance to the council chambers. Madeleine Talbott, a leader with Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), said she felt justified in trying to lift a table to get past police who were guarding the doors. "We have a right to be in there and to watch them use parliamentary tricks to block this vote," Talbott said moments after being handcuffed. 'ACORN, the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless and the Service Employees International Union Local 880 are among several groups that have championed the cause. The protest Wednesday was the latest in a series that began last year. But in recent months, the groups have grown frustrated with aldermen who signed on to the plan, only later to join Mayor Richard M. Daley in opposing it. The protest began about 10 a.m. and continued through noon. By the time the measure came to a vote around 2 p.m., protesters who remained seated in the upper gallery watched in futility as the measure was tabled on a 31-17 vote. As Daley banged the gavel to close the meeting, several protesters pounded the windows from the upper gallery and chanted "pay back time in '99," referring to the next election. Business groups, including the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, have joined Daley in fighting the "living-wage" measure, saying it could hurt small businesses and force layoffs or business closings. Daley said he opposes mandating wages for private employers because it would add to taxpayer costs or force contractors to cut payrolls. Alderman Dorothy Tillman countered that the plan is a modest requirement for companies. "We're talking about $7.50. The people here (in the city council) are making $75,000 a year." Alderman Joe Moore agreed, saying, "It's a cutting-edge issue.... You can bet in the elections of 1999, this will come up if it doesn't get passed." Others charged with mob action and disorderly conduct were: Dian Lovett, 38, of Chicago with Homeless on the Move for Equality; union workers Maggie Laslo, 24, of Chicago, and Michael Stewart, 23, of Woodridge; John Donahue, 60, of Chicago, director of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless; and Jonathan Green, 24, of Chicago

The Obama/ACORN connection

Obama forged path as Chicago community organizer LA Times, 3/2/2008

"He got people to vote with their feet" on the issue, organizer Madeleine Talbot said. At the time, Talbot worked at the social action group ACORN and initially considered Obama a competitor. But she became so impressed with his work that she invited him to help train her staff.

Weird. Even Boss Daley knows you can’t slay the golden goose (small and medium business) to get at all the eggs.

Obama helped train ACORN operatives to intimidate people and promote illegal voting.

Muslims say that Satan lays eggs that come from his legs, so maybe Obama is one of them that hatched, and so there was no birth certificate.
