Registration Gains Favor Democrats
Washington comPost ^ | 10/6/2008 | Alec MacGinnis, Alice Crites

As the deadline for voter registration arrives today in many states, Sen. Barack Obama's campaign is poised to benefit from a wave of newcomers to the rolls in key states in numbers that far outweigh any gains made by Republicans.

In the past year, the rolls have expanded by about 4 million voters in a dozen key states -- 11 Obama targets that were carried by George W. Bush in 2004 (Ohio, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Indiana, Missouri, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada and New Mexico) plus Pennsylvania, the largest state carried by Sen. John F. Kerry that Sen. John McCain is targeting.

In Florida, Democratic registration gains this year are more than double those made by Republicans; in Colorado and Nevada the ratio is 4 to 1, and in North Carolina it is 6 to 1. Even in states with nonpartisan registration, the trend is clear -- of the 310,000 new voters in Virginia, a disproportionate share live in Democratic strongholds.

Republicans acknowledge the challenge but say Obama still has to prove he can get the new voters to the polls.

Registering homeless, out-of-state students, and illegal aliens...a massive success for Barry Hussein. Darned shame that a percentage of them will vote.

They were predicting massive voter fraud, and it looks like that prediction has become a reality.

I don't know how the come up with the numbers for dems in VA.

Although it's been 31 years for me, I don't think VA requires you to put down your party affiliation when you vote....

You are correct — no party registration in VA. However, if most of the new voters are black, might as well call them Dims.

so far the Ohio strategy of signing them up and marching them over to vote has been a loser for Obama, very few have participated.

In Ohio, it is true we have many more Dems now than Pubbies BUT, in the Primary many were Pubbies who changed their voter registration to vote against Obami and vote for Hillary. They really are not true Dems and they will not vote for Obami. More importantly, you should not think for one minute that the Ohio conservative Dems are happy. They don’t have his signs in their yards or on their cars, they are not speaking at all about this election. I have seen only three Obami signs in the county and the only people who hang around their HQ is blacks. Nearly all their door to door workers are from out of state.

Just promise them cigarettes and condoms like they did before.

Many of these new “Democrats” registered during Operation Chaos.

“North Carolina it is 6 to 1”

Not good at all. My state is in play and I never thought it would be this close to the election. Its been a long time since both parties have been putting money into it and having their candidates visit this close to the election. We are a state that should have been sealed up long ago and those resources should have been available to fight elsewhere. No question that this is one that we didn’t count on having to defend six months ago.

Hard to make up registration stats though.

A high percentage of them are young too. Youngens are a problem for us this election. I guess it should be no shock that those who don’t, as a group, own property and who are in lower tax brackets in general would love a guy who wants to handout government money like candy. They’ll get smarter as they get older. Hopefully by November.
