Retiring U.S. Sen. John Warner on Saturday voiced disappointment in fellow Republican Jim Gilmore's efforts to succeed him this fall and declined to endorse him.
Instead, Warner suggested that he may wind up backing Democrat Mark Warner in the race. The two Warners are not related.
John Warner took exception to Gilmore's strong condemnation of a $700 billion Wall Street rescue package that was passed by the House of Representatives on Friday and signed by President Bush.
"I'm disappointed that he spoke against the rescue package that's vital to Virginia and vital to the nation," John Warner said during a telephone news conference.
John Warner, who chose not to seek a sixth Senate term this fall, voted for the bailout last week.
Gilmore, trailing badly in polls, repeatedly criticized the rescue in a Friday night debate with Mark Warner in Roanoke. "It's not right to take $700 billion of money from the taxpayers, men and women who work hard every day, and put it in the arms of the high rollers of Wall Street," he said.
Gilmore said the bailout will create pressure for higher taxes. He said the federal government, instead of buying bad debt from financial institutions, should have loaned them money at low interest to capitalize markets.
The old fart’s endorsement isn’t worth squat - Jim Gilmore should count himself blessed.
He is blessed. The liberal press in Virginia is going to play this up all week and boost Gilmore who has gained 7 points over the last month. This race just might get interesting on election day.
Didn’t Gilmore vote the way the voters wanted him to?
This should help him get elected if voters have any brains at all!
Instead, Warner suggested that he may wind up backing Democrat Mark Warner in the race.
Why you POS. Good riddance to you. RINO!
Well just darn. I was considering voting third party in that race....but with *that* kind of backhanded endorsement from the liberal John Warner, I might be forced to vote for Gov. Gilmore.
A traitor to the very end...
This makes me all the happier that I already voted for Gilmore. John Warner is one of the most despicable people to have served in the Senate, at least (allegedly) on the Republican side. I am proud to say I have never voted for him .. and he is the only so-called R I can say that about. Creep.
This loser sucked as SECNAV and he sucks as a Human Being. I can’t believe that an endorsement or lack of one would matter much.
Gilmore's not currently an office holder. But yeah, he's got the voters minds on this one.
John Warner was always a miserable failure of a senator, one of the worst. Pro-abort, strongly anti-gun (to the left of John effin Kerry), likes “hate-crime” laws, opposed Ronald Reagan on Bork, voted against the charge of perjury for Clinton, and then joined in the gang of 14 assault. The traitor also voted for the failed bailout (comprehensive taxpayer theft act of 2008).
The party apparatus should have never supported him. No more rinos.
This is what is wrong with the Republican Party. These old idiots want to protect themselves and to hell with everyone else. The bailout was wrong and if McCain doesnt jump on Fannie/Freddie he will lose. Something is wrong big time.
John Warner is a traitor.
John Warner = VA’s Lincoln Chaffee.
John Warner also did this before, refusing to endorse Oliver North for Senate.
John Warner may be a turncoat, he is by no means a traitor.
Amen! I loved watching the debate between Mark Warner and Jim Gilmore on TV last Friday night. Gilmore was right there with most of the VA GOP Representatives. He said he would have voted NO for this bailout and if sent to the Senate would vote NO for any future coming bailouts...and he said they're coming for sure. He really slammed 'horse-face' on drilling and on clean coal and ANWAR and real offshore drilling...even Virginia. Warner is against offshore of Virginia.
