Barack Obama suggested this weekend that children of illegal immigrants should have an opportunity to attend community colleges.
In an interview with WUNC this weekend, the Democratic presidential candidate said children who attend public schools should have the chance to continue to improve themselves.
"For us to deny them access to community college, even though they've never lived in Mexico, at least as far as they can tell ... is to deny that this is how we've always built this country up," he said.
The campaign of Republican John McCain issued a statement saying he was opposed to providing benefits to illegal immigrants, but did not address community college attendance, which has been a contentious issue in North Carolina.
"John McCain does not support amnesty or benefits for undocumented immigrants," his campaign said in the statement. "He has consistently opposed giving amnesty or public benefits to undocumented immigrants."
Doesn’t look like this will play too well with the folks in North Carolina.
obama wants to give “illegals” community college education on the taxpayers dime?
Not sure what to do with this.
Finally, coming around. Of course now you’ll have all the socialist hispanic “leaders” condemning him. Well, who cares, they weren’t going to vote for him anyway.
I guess. The article doesn’t say. I surmized that from the McCain response.
“obama wants to give ‘illegals’ community college education on the taxpayers dime?”
From what I gather, Obama is talking about natural born citizens whose parents are illegals. At least, that’s what the whole never lived in Mexico thing implies. I’m not up to speed on the court cases, but I’d assume the children of illegals born on U.S. soil are legal citizens.
By the way, I don’t think anyone should go to community college. Waste of time. Burn them down.
Obama’s comment is about the CHILDREN of illegal immigrants, who if born here, are citizens.
Then, that comment seems juxtaposed with a comment from McCain about illegal immigrants, NOT their children who were born here.
Or am I missing something at this late hour?
Ok, I’m not the only one who noticed that, LOL.
Basically, Obama’s quote is him saying he would give people that to which they are already entitled. Sounds like a gaffe to me.
I remember during the primary debate when Hillary said she believed that illegals should have drivers licenses, 0bama agreed and was enthusiastic about it.
We have heard nothing about this during the campaign. It would be as simple as making an ad using the raw debate footage. Doesn’t get much easier than that!
Is the McCain campaign and RNC sleeping at the wheel on this?
If they were born in the USA they are citizens even if mom and dad were illegal aliens.
Good point. The qualifier begs further clarification.
The State of Texas under Republican leadership granted in-state tuition for illegal aliens to public universities.
interesting opinion on CC
The community college system in Virginia is set up as feeder schools to the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. You can do your first two years cheaply and locally, then transfer in directly, if you've got the grades. Other states differ I'm sure, but our system is excellent.
Seriously, 0baby can forget about any false hopes he ever had about NC. I think that was a wet dream anyway.
If they are paying tuition and book fees what’s the problem with children of illegals attending community college?
I’m against illegal immigration and all that so don’t start in on me that way. I’m just wondering if there is some other issue about them going to community college. And, yes, I’m against them getting financial aid.
I’m in New York. Our Community College’s are great first steps. A lot of kids find out what they really want to be after two years. Gets a lot of the mandatory cr** courses out of the way, too.
