Senate Republicans on Friday blocked a plan by Democrats to pump $56 billion in government spending into the economy through public works projects, help for the jobless and money for states struggling with their Medicaid bills.
The 52-42 tally fell well short of the 60 votes needed to defeat a GOP filibuster. The White House promised a veto anyway, saying the measure would not work and would cost too much.
The House was expected to have better luck with a companion $61 billion House plan later in the day.

What a damn lie!!!! The Dems could PASS THIS BILL WITH BOTH HOUSES! THEY HAVE THE MAJORITY! NOT ONE REPUBLICAN VOTE IS NECESSARY!!!.............
Later in the day there’s a $61 billion bill?
I have a headache.
BULL!!!
What, our Senators showing some spine???
I don’t believe it - there must be some other explanation.
I hope their spines stay in tact. They need to lead; and not the faux leadership(lol)of Reid and Pelosi.
Leadership makes all the difference. You can call yourself a leader; but if you aren’t leading for the right thing; it is not leadership.
No, they can’t. Senate can block bringing something to a vote and if the leadership decided to go nuclear and impose it (they wouldn’t) then Bush would veto and have it stand.
They’d better block this. ~Or make lots of noise because this is less about a credit seizeup that the Fed and Bernanke have deliberately created along with all the big players, and more about a vast power play.
You mean Reid, Pelosi and the 127 day wonder Obama! Remember its the reid/pelosi/obama congress.
This is like watching Rome burn to the ground...
WTF is going on?!
It appears to me that the Democrats are determined to put as much pork into this bill as they possibly can, and it is focused on organizations that can help the party (over the nation).
If either party is playing this pork barrel game, I want it outed and stopped dead cold in it’s tracks.
I can’t express my thoughts enough, that the Democrats are absolutely the most destructive force I have seen in my lifetime.
Senate Republicans on Friday blocked a plan by Democrats to pump $56 billion in government spending into the economy through public works projects, help for the jobless and money for states struggling with their Medicaid bills.
The 52-42 tally
OKAY how did the Republicans block this??
No.1 it did not even receive a simple majority vote in favor.
No.2 There are not 52 Republican senators so obvoiusly some Democrats voted against it.
No.3. The are 100 Senators and only 94 cast votes so some Senators maybe even democrats did not post an actual vote.
Yet the article STATES as a fact that the Republicans blocked the passage.
Isn’t anyone truthful in the media any more?
Sounds like the plan is “keep printing more money.”
Being as they have bought millions of houses they are now Colonists.
No different than the Muslims in Europe.
Hurrah for govenment saying no to spending.
However, I do support works projects to help the poor, above free give aways of any kind. This may be a reasonable program.
WOW, was there an election that I missed?
Democraps need cover for the sh** sandwich they want the public to eat.
Filibuster
Did you read the article?
Here’s how.
No. 1 — Actually it did receive a simple majority vote in favor. 52 voted for it; 42 voted against it. By prior agreement, the vote in favor had to be at least 60. Otherwise, proponents would have had to file cloture and that would have delayed the vote for 2 days. They didn’t get 60, so the vote failed and the Senate moved on.
No. 2 — 40 Republicans voted no, plus Democrats Bayh and McCaskill. The yes votes were the remaining Dems present plus Lieberman and Sanders, and 6 Republicans (Coleman, Collins, Dole, Smith, Snowe, and Specter).
No. 3 — 6 Senators were absent, 3 Dems (Kennedy, Obama, and Biden) and 3 Repubs (Stevens, McCain, and Graham).
