ABC News has learned that President Bush called Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., this evening and invited him to participate in a meeting about the Wall Street bailout bill tomorrow afternoon in Washington, DC, with other congressional leaders, including Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
Obama accepted the president's invitation, a source tells ABC News.
The invitation comes at an interesting time. The President has not been in the middle of negotiations with Congress, leaving that task to his Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.
McCain earlier today announced he was suspending his campaign -- and his participation in the first presidential debate Friday night -- in order to return to the Capitol to work on the flailing bill. McCain's move has been denounced by Democrats and political observers as a political gimmick, though the McCain campaign insists the senator is trying to put politics aside to solve the stalled legislation.
President Bush's move could be seen as an attempt to aid McCain's gambit by creating a presidential-level meeting where the Arizona Republican is present.
Obama still intends to attend the debate Friday evening.
Bush got Obama to reverse himself and do what McCain suggested. Of course, the article treats McCain as an afterthought as if Bush needed Obama there so much.
Obama is a punk coward who has never made an important decision in his life, he wants no part of this one.
Agreed.
McCain's move has been denounced by Democrats and political observers as a political gimmick
Okay "Democrats and political observers", is McCain's move STILL a gimmick?
just the first of several surprises tonight that will vindicate McCain and embarrass BO
Believe me, GWB is NOT going to do anything to screw it up for McCain or the Republicans, something is cooking and let’s face it, Barack can’t smell it!
McCain never said he wasn’t going. He asked bonehead if they could agree to postpone them. Bonehead said no, so I believe we’ll have the debates as scheduled.
Is this part of a brilliant strategy, or did President Bush just save McCain’s ass?
LMAO!
you summed it up perfectly in a few lines. The McBrilliant campaign hits another one out of the park...
If democrats would denounce me I’d feel cleansed.
Give it a break. The average American voter doesn’t care whether the debate is held Friday or next Wednesday or the following Thursday. What they do care about is being able to get a car loan, being able to sell their house (without being scalped) when they have to move because of a job change and being able to believe that their 401(k)s will be worth something when they retire.
It would have, if President Bush hadn't decided to step all over the message by inviting Hussein to the White House. Now Baracka can say, "See, I told you they'd call me if they needed me. No harm, no foul". The President could have legitimately said, "Look, ordinarily I would have invited Senator Obama to this meeting, but he said he didn't want to suspend his campaign. What was I supposed to do?" But, no, one last time El Presidente had to play Mr. Nice Guy (whose "legacy" finished last), and help bail out a Democrat in trouble (like he did for Nagin and Blanco). All in the sacred name of "bi-partisanship".
How’s this for a scenario: they get together and “fix” this, with everyone in on it (not sure if this is good or bad). Then debate on Friday. 0bama will be off his game, while McCain will be fresh and ready to go. Talking heads on Sunday will split hairs between the debate and the bailout. 0bama loses out on both.
McCain volunteers to come sort out the economic mess, its his agenda, Bambi had to be forced by the President, which he couldnt turn down.
MCain goes to Washington
Bambi says No
President basically says get your ass here
Obama cant really refuse.
I like the way you summed that up!
Without using the action verb.... Let the O-boy cum up with his own plan.....
Agreed. McCain got ahead on this and showed some spine. Barry looks like another hack politician, that caved when he couldn’t hold out any longer. Now let’s see if Barry can lead.
Except, the MSM will twist it to say "BO is so important that the Prez had to call him in for advice on this financial crisis"!!!
Of course it was. It makes it look like it takes a Presidential directive to get Obama to fulfill his Senatorial duties ... Which it apparently does.
Obama votes with Bush 100% of the time at least today. /s
Hmmmm . . . . so the only one not needed is:
drum roll . . . .
Sarah Palin!
Out there on her own, doin’ some campaigin’? Or is she called off, too?
With McCain he is likely doing this w/o caring what the politics are. He kinda flies his own direction and this just may work out. W/o addressing the corruption this is a waste of $$$.
If he makes the debate he will look like Superman.
Pray for W, McCain and Our Troops
