Report: 1 in 10 Hispanics asked about immigration status
Dallas Morning News ^ | September 19, 2008 | Dianne Solis

Nearly one in 10 Hispanics in the U.S. reported that in the last year police or other authorities have stopped them and asked them about their immigration status, the Pew Hispanic Center said in a report released Thursday.

The finding comes amid the biggest crackdown in decades against illegal immigration – one especially evident in Texas, the No. 2 destination for such migrants. Municipal police in several suburbs of Dallas, including Irving and Carrollton, have stepped up cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Nationally, deportations or removals of Mexicans, Salvadorans and Guatemalans from the interior of the United States have doubled since 2005, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Renato de los Santos, a Latino leader in Dallas, called the survey's finding alarming and suggested that racial, ethnic or language profiling should be stopped unless it involves a terrorism suspect.

"It is the only way we as U.S. citizens should tolerate that," said Mr. de los Santos, a North Texas district director for the League of United Latin American Citizens.

In Washington, the report's co-author Mark Lopez characterized the finding as surprising but declined to speculate on causes as survey follow-up questions weren't asked.

The report by the nonpartisan research center surveyed about 2,000 Hispanic adults and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points. Hispanics constitute about 15.4 percent of the U.S. population, or 46 million people. Roughly 30 million are over 18 years of age. About half of the adult population is foreign-born.

A spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement declined to comment.

In Irving, where Latinos and the regional Mexican consul complained loudly last year about police procedures, police spokesman David Tull emphasized that Irving police officers don't carry out deportations. But in booking at the jail, citizenship is established, Officer Tull said. If officers believe ICE should be called to do further inquiry, the agency is called, he said.

It’s a start. The ratio should be reversed, though, and all those who are illegal should be immediately be deported, if not guilty of a violent crime.

Which brings the total number to what? Two?

One of my American Hispanic friends said that this is one of the reasons he supports strict border control. He doesn’t like being suspected but says it’s a minor inconvenience.

Outrageous! It should be nine in ten, striving for ten in ten.

“Affirmative action” and “diversity” programs are also racially profiling, Renato. How do you feel about those?

It’s just a deliberate blurring of the lines to garner sympathy for the illegals and play the race card.

I have yet to meet a LEGAL immigrant who I wasn’t glad to welcome to this country. Without fail, they have been wonderful, hardworking people of integrity who have made good contributions to society. We need more of them and you.

Yeah. How do you know if there is an involvement with terrorism unless you ask for ID?
The picture of a taco vendor in Mexico being a look-a-like for Saddam Hussien comes to mind.

Indeed, we cannot forget that. America is made up of a great melting pot of those who came here to be Americans. To wait their turn in line. To embrace this greatest nation on God’s green Earth. I welcome decent people from all over the world who respect our laws and want to be an American above all else. It is a tragedy that the fabric of our society is being ripped apart because some think they are compassionate. No, they are destroying America.

I don’t know.

However, I feel for you. The illegals have so tarnished the reputation of being Hispanic, that now all Hispanics have been cast in a poor light and often come under suspicion. It’s a heavy burden to bear and not fair to those like you.

And, BTW, thank you for your service to our country.

Maybe they can. Many people want to destroy this nation and be subservient to the United Nations so everything would be peace and harmony.

That is very low. There are 20 million illegals here. Most are Mexican, but we also have hundreds of thousands from Central America and, in places like Chicago, even farther afield, Ecuador. Given these numbers, a much higher percentage of Hispanics should be asked about their status. If they belong here, no harm, no foul. As good citizens they will doubtless understand that the questioning is understandable and that the struggle against massive illegal immigration serves the interests of all loyal Americans.

This is outrageous...Johnny Sutton needs to prosecute and jail all the police.

I would hope I wouldn’t be asked about my immigration status. I don’t look it, but I have a Puerto Rican last name. Though my first name has been on the most popular boy’s name list for a long time.

Why not look vfor illegal aliens also ????

A few sweeps and the illegal aliens will start to leave on their own...

We need to change our LEGAL immigration policies as well, including reducing the numbers from the current 1.2 million annually to about 300,000 [per the Jordan Commission], going to a merit based system to bring in immigrants who will benefit this nation, curtail chain migration to the nuclear family, eliminate birthright citizenship, abolish the visa lottery program, and expand the 287[g] program to leverage law enforcement assets and deport illegal aliens thru an attrition thru enforcement program.
