BAY RIDGE Adding to the hotly contested battles to replace outgoing Congressman Vito Fossella is a political crazy-quilt pattern to Democrat Mike McMahons campaign after his endorsement by Staten Islands top Conservative, while not so favorite GOP son Robert Straniere is upset over apparent dissentient inter-party dirty tricks.
In one of Campaign 08s bizarre political twists, Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro, Richmond Countys Conservative Party executive vice chair, endorsed McMahon. This was accepted by the moderate Staten Island councilman as a logical move, given his working relationship with Molinaro since 2002.
Molinaro, who was elected twice as borough president on the Republican and Conservative lines and has been a registered Conservative Party member since 1964, announced his endorsement with McMahon at the Staten Island ferry terminal a week ago. It was not unusual, said McMahon, noting that Molinaro twice endorsed him for the City Council post.
...........
In 2004 Molinaro, former GOP Congressman Guy Molinari and other Staten Island GOP leaders revolted and turned against then Assemblyman Straniere by running Staten Island Councilman Vincent Ignizio in a primary election, defeating Straniere in his 24th year in the assembly. Straniere had sought the borough presidency in 2001 and lost the primary to Molinaro.
In a statement, Straniere called Molinaros endorsement a disservice to the Conservative Party and all its members in the district who want to elect a genuine conservative candidate, like myself, who will truly advance the policies, programs, interest and ideals that I share with the Conservative Party.
............
On Friday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg endorsed McMahon, praising him for his non-partisan approach.

Also foolish for backing McMahon for the council which has like 2 or 3 Republicans on it.
To their credit the Conservative Party at the behest of the Brooklyn faction hadn't endorsed the RAT but also foolishly some random dude who recently dropped out to run for a judgeship.
He needs to be replaced now but they say THE REPUBLICAN Bob Straniere WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED for some some stupid reason. ENDORSE THE REPUBLICAN you fools, there is nothing wrong with him, he is a conservative. The CP is supposed to be a ballot line for a conservative to run on IF the NY GOP goes with a RINO (although they backed Pataki just fine), they shouldn't be taking votes away from a conservative or backing a leftist RAT. The last thing needed is some joker taking away a few crucial % points on a third party ticket.
The chances of holding this seat are growing slimmer and slimmer, some call it the rats best pickup chance. Bush won NY-13, McCain will win it, this is a travesty. These idiots should have united behind 1 candidate GOP and Conservative party but no they let retarded personal vendettas get in the way.
More (expletive) news out of New York-13. (Expletive).
Best way to keep a minority, *iss away seats needlessly!
“Molinaro is a corrupt idiot who should lose his job.”
He’s got nothing to lose due to term limits. He is out. McMahon is a rascist buffoon. When he ran for City Council from the North Shore of S.I., his team was calling the Black woman running against him an “Uncle Tom” behind her back. She ran as an Independent and lost. The Dems on Staten Island NEVER run African-American candidates because they are afraid they might actually win.
The problem with New York is that it long ago became a one party state. There is no republican party or conservative party for that matter. The moderate democrats are in the NY GOP while the radicals are in the genuine dem party. Unless the base realizes they have been had and take over the parties from the bottom up nothing will change.
It’s appalling. A loss here brings us that much closer to an ALL-DEMOCRAT NY delegation. Molinaro and these cretins need to ponder that fact. They probably all ought to be booted from the local party.
Molinari absolutely detests Straniere, has for many years now.
New York City has a lot of bi-partisan log-rolling. For example, in the district once known as Archie Bunker’s District, Republicans don’t contest the Congressional seat, and in exchange, the ‘Rats don’t seriously oppose the Republican state Senator there. Look for something like that to happen after MacMahon is elected to Congress.
Molinaro follows three rules for endorsements.
A) Never endorse a republican if it means he/she will win.
B) Always endorse a Republican when it will make no difference. He endorsed Pat Karney against Marty Connors and Pat got 30%. He endorsed Freddy Cerullo and Freddy got 80%. Then he found out things about how Freddy lives his life and withdrew the C line. Freddy laughed at him and got 75%.
C) Always endorse ANY named Molinari or anyone who has hand Guy's hands laid upon him. In the 4th of July parade in Travis Guy marched with mcmahon.
At least three times, because Molinaro gave Vitaliano the C line Eric was able to hold on after losing D to R.
Jimmy's vendetta against the GOP goes back to 1979 when he thought he would get the Staten Island GOP nod to run in a special Assembly race. His campaign literature that year said he ran a “salvage yard” in lower Manhattan at the age of 29. If that means nothing to you I don't have the space to explain how significant it it.
When Guy Molinari unexpectedly beat Absam Jack Murphy in 1980 because of the backing he got from the new Conservative Party, there was NO one who wanted to take the job as his chief of staff. Molinaro got it by default. He was selected at a kitchen table meeting in kind of a scene from the movie “Being there”.
Yes we are going to lose this seat. mcmahon will vote for pelosi and everything else he is told to vote for. Me? I don't read the Advance anymore because I am mentally withdrawing from this once beautiful place to live.
The two jerks, Oddo and Ignizzio think they were cute with the piece of crap mailer they sent out. Believe me this is Nassau County all over again. They crooked GOP out there didn't care about the Congressional seats. They wanted their little jobs and the patronage that went with them. Well guess what? The Democrats said “thank you very much” and took the Congressional seats and used them to consolidate power to crush the stupid little minded Republicans. On the Island we will next lose Oddo’s seat. Then they will come after Andy Lanza’s seat and finally Lou Tobbaco’s seat and ignizzio’s seat. The rat will connect all the dots and that will be it.
I think you’re confusing this with Guy Molinari, this is James Molinaro, the SI Borough President. But they may both hate Straniere, but this crap has got to stop for the good of the party. If Straniere loses, this’ll be the first time since 1978 that NYC has no Republicans in Congress.
Sickening. This kind of crap is how we lost Massachusetts and New Jersey bit by bit. Time to purge the pukes before we lose it all.
Hey kids, this is not a TV show. This is our republic. Sixth-grade Civics anyone?
Waste management?
If that's what you're getting at it doesn't surprise me.
How retarded.
What seat is Archie Bunker's seat, Weiner's? Bush took 44% there in 04. Although he won the Brooklyn part and Bunker lived in the Queens. You could probably draw a district Bush carried in Brooklyn from parts of the 8th and 9th districts.
If the Senator you mean is Serphin Maltese, I think he's their #1 target this year......
I meant his job with the Conservative party.
Isn’t Bo. President a fairly meaningless post?
“McMahon is a rascist buffoon.”
Wow, what a shock.
James MolinarO is a caricature. Guy Molinari is as well, but smarter.
Both of them have vendettas against Straniere - I don’t remember why, but believe it was because he did not follow the bosses’ directions. The Molinari camp was ruthless in trying to destroy Straniere.
I will support Straniere just on principle. Party politics should stop at the county line. Straniere won the primary and deserves the vigorous support of the party hierarchy. The MoMo’s should put aside their personal vendettas and do what is right for the district and the country. We need all the Republicans we can get in Congress.
