McCain goes on offense, links Obama to credit crisis

John McCain shifted gears in Iowa today and reminded voters in Cedar Rapids that he predicted the outcome of the credit crisis two years ago, and few bothered to act. McCain also aggressively painted Barack Obama as a prime example of do-nothing politicians co-opted by lobbyist money. His speech pointed out the amount of money Obama has received from Fannie/Freddie donors and the advisers he uses that helped create the crisis (emphases mine):

Senator Obama talks a tough game on the financial markets but the facts tell a different story. He took more money from Fannie and Freddie than any Senator but the Democratic chairman of the committee that regulates them. He put Fannie Mae’s CEO who helped create this disaster in charge of finding his Vice President. Fannie’s former General Counsel is a senior advisor to his campaign. Whose side do you think he is on? When I pushed legislation to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Senator Obama was silent. He didn’t lift a hand to avert this crisis. While the leaders of Fannie and Freddie were lining the pockets of his campaign, they were sowing the seeds of the financial crisis we see today and enriching themselves with millions of dollars in payments. That’s not change, that’s what’s broken in Washington.

Why did it take him two days for this response?

I sit in gleeful anticipation of the sophistry that Paul Krugman is going to bring to bear in order to twist this to the Democrats’ favor.

Hallelujah! I think he could further add that Sen. Obama was nowhere to be found when McCain proposed a bill to reform Freddie and Fannie in ‘05, that Obama’s country needed him on this issue then.

I heard McCain on Hannity yesterday and the little laugh he gave when Sean asked if he’d be using this on the campaign trail made me think this would be coming today. GOOD JOB!

What are we doing in Iowa? The dumb farmers there will never vote for McCain after he rightfully castrated them.

“Why did it take him two days for this response?”

Two days don’t matter much ... because this is a theme he can (and should) run with right up until the election.

“McCain goes on offense, links Obama to credit crisis”

Everybody connected with Congress lives in a glass house on this issue. Legitimately, only Palin escapes blame.

>>>>>>Today Senator Obama’s running mate said that raising taxes is patriotic. Raising taxes in a tough economy isn’t patriotic. It’s not a badge of honor. It’s just dumb policy.

Some FReepers are disappointed with McCain in the last week. This is McCain's best red meat attack line in awhile. Needs to be repeated.

The crafty old fighter pilot was taking his time lining up his shot. That bandit ain't going no place but down in flames. He wanted to hit him with his best shot.

The McCain campaign is not rolling over.

I have to say that compared to GOP campaigns I recall the McCain campaign is showing a much faster response and a more aggressive profile than any of them. They have had BO’s campaign on the defensive for a good deal of the time since the beginning of June and it doesn’t look to me like they are going to let up.
