Will McCain Waste Palin?
The Wall Street Journal ^ | SEPTEMBER 18, 2008 | DANIEL HENNINGER

Posted on 09/18/2008 9:20:39 AM PDT by presidio9

The media is turning the news into a presidential video game. "Hurricane Ike" or "Wall Street Meltdown" appears onscreen, and the media boots up Barack Obama and John McCain to see how well they talk the problem. Mostly they are speaking gobbledygook about things they barely understand. Whatever a credit default swap is,

When the investment schemes are too complex for the candidates and normal, voting citizens to understand, we are in trouble. There aren't any journalists or politicians who can articulate exactly how this financial mess came about. Trouble!!

Speaking of wasting Palin, I keep hearing more and more rumors that Biden is about to drop out of the race, citing health reasons. He will be replaced by Hillary. I'm getting this mainly from emails, but one of my friends is fairly high up in the state Democratic organization. Does anyone else have anything more than rumor about it?

Forget the Tina Fey SNL mockery and all the marginalia being written about Sarah Palin now. She did four real things in Alaska that make her fit for anyone interested in a reform presidency. She took on: her party's state chairman, her party's state attorney general, GOP Gov. Frank Murkowski's tainted gas pipeline project, and then she supported a GOP candidate who ran against Alaska's "untouchable" GOP congressional earmarker, Don Young.

~~snip~~

Unfocused "reform" rhetoric from Mr. McCain isn't enough. The public has been there, heard that. Sen. McCain should talk about what he knows -- fat Fannie and Freddie, farm-bill bloat, the ethanol subsidy fiasco, the federal procurement mess. Show people Gov. Palin's 18 single-spaced pages of 2007 vetoes. Then identify Congress's bipartisan supporters of the Legislative Line-Item Veto Act and ask the voters' support. Appear with GOP congressman from Sarah's new generation who want to help -- Eric Cantor of Virginia, Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, Kevin McCarthy of California. There are others.

Good editorial and no doubt the McCain campaign is already headed in this direction. However, this should help with a shove.

I’m voting for Sarah. But for having chosen her, McCain’s a bum.

If it was going to happen, it needed to happen already. If it happens now. it is unmistakable desperation. Voters don’t like deseration. Especially the brainless undecided voters who still can’t make up their mind between two night and day choices at this point.

Also, there is some question as to whether it would even be legal.

Wow, what a powerful visual that would be!

Somehow I screwed up the cut and paste. I told the moderator, so hopefully he will see it and correct it at some point. Henninger is one of my favorites.

Why do you feel it needed to already happen? I agree that it would reflect desperation, but I think that's the mode they are in right now. I think the ticket would be stronger with Hillary, which is why I hope you're correct.

If you read some of my old posts, you'll see that I wasn't real thrilled with McCain, either. However, he's winning me (and a whole lot of others) over to his side with his words and his actions, not the least of which is his brilliant selection of Palin. I'm trying to read his positions without my previous bias and I'm starting to like what I read.

Here’s the PDF, fyi:

http://www.gov.state.ak.us/omb/08_OMB/budget/Enacted/SB53_Vetoes_6-29-07.pdf

And yes, she looks even handed in these vetoes, which inc. funds for the Boys/Girls Club & even (sniff) the Boy Scouts.

I agree. The sticker on my car says “Sarah Palin for Vice President.”

I’m with her, not him. He’s just the “SDS.” (Sarah Delivery System)

It is looking more and more likely that McCain is going to WASTE Sarah. As Rush has just mentioned, McCain is turning Sarah into a toothless politicians just like McCain and Bush.

The entire Obama/Democrats/MSM team have been out there bashing Republicans for the economy. And all you hear McCain and Palin saying was:”Oh..it’s greed on the Wall Street”.

Come on man.. this is sickening. We have had 8 years of Bush. We don’t need another toothless president who doesn’t call out the Dems for their failure. Politics is not about staying on the ‘high ground’. We need leaders that will take the fight to the RATS.

Soft soft soft Mccain..maybe it’s not a bad idea for Obama to win, for Dems to control both house and senate. Ultimately, we the conservatives are the people that can take care of ourselves. We don’t need government to do so. The libs will ultimately suffer the most under socialism.

Man.. you can tell that I am really pissed.

Was it Joe Kennedy who got out of the stock market before the crash after his shoe-shine boy gave him tips on stocks?

I think that's the legend.

I agree, substantive but not likely to sway any votes. Palin's biggest assets are her charisma and personality. Projecting those past the hostile filter of the MSM is not easy, and booking her onto hostile interview forums is not even trying - it's just playing into the hands of the Democrats.

Sarah Palin getting pop quizzes from the likes of Charles Gibson and Katie Couric is not Sarah Palin at her best. No one wants to see her list of vetoes - she wins hearts and minds when people can see and hear her directly, not through the prism of network interviewers. If McCain can figure out a way to deliver that, he'll be making full use of the clever selection he made.

They have plenty of ammunition to use so they should use it. McCain has been pretty tough so far in this campaign. He is more of a scrappy fighter than Bush. But if they let themselves be blamed for the economy it will be a disaster. I fear though that no matter what the candidates do, too many Americans just blame the incumbent party or believe the old myths about typical Republicans.

I suppose there is an up side to Obama winning. When everything goes down the drain we can say we told you so, and enjoy the Dems’ downfall. Unfortunately all of us will be going down too. I say we can speak out, but that presumes we will still have free speech.

Does anyone think that ANYONE can turn Sarah into something SHE DOES NOT WANT to be? Rush is just stirring up the pot. You gotta love him!!

Sarah will mold McCain, not the other way around

What makes Palin unique is her combination of charm and “pit-bull” politics. She will not get elected based on charm alone. In fact, that works against her because she seems too nice, not presidential.

The image of the smiling Gov. Palin standing next to McCain when he lets the fan-folded 19 pages of vetoes drop to the floor would be incredibly powerful. Similar to Reagan’s famous federal budget paper stack moment.
