I hope they name the new carriers Enterprise, Yortown, etc.. Nothing against Ford.. I do understand having the ship name Lincoln, Reagan, Roosevelt, Washington, and the First Bush.. But Ford????

I wish they’d go back to the old naming system of American battles. I can understand naming a carrier after FDR or Reagan but I have a problem with naming one USS Ford.

The Electromagnetic Aircraft Launching System (EMALS) has a higher level of control than the steam-powered catapults employed by Nimitz-class carriers. EMALS can launch heavier and lighter craft, making it compatible with UAVs. EMALS is more efficient, smaller lighter, more powerful, easier to control, and places less stress on airframes by gradually increasing the aircraft’s speed. UAV integration is also made possible by the Advanced Arresting Gear System, which uses electromagnetism, rather than hydraulics, to capture aircraft.
***This seems to be the most radical improvement. If they tweak the EMALS system a bit, maybe it could be used as a weapons firing system as well?

What is the tonnage and speed estimate compared to the Nimitz. It these things are going to last till 2060 and beyond, we need Faster and Stealthier not bigger.

Capital ships of the United States Navy should not be named after dead politicians.

It's that simple.

And, politics being what it is, for every Ford there will be a Clinton, for every Vinson, a Barney Frank.

It's inevitable.

So if you support naming these wonderful national symbols after Ford and Bush, don't complain when the USS Barney Frank is announced.

Much better to use famous battles, symbols, or ideals.
