Bishops to Discuss Abortion Politics in Full Assembly

The Administrative Committee of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops is that body’s highest authority outside the bishops’ plenary assemblies. The committee has been meeting in DC this week and have issued a statement endorsing prior statements from Cardinal Rigali on the matters of Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Joe Biden’s Meet The Press abortion remarks.

They have further determined that the bishops as a whole will take up the issue of abortion and politics at their next plenary meeting in November.

Here the Administrative Committee’s statement:

In light of recent comments by Catholic politicians misrepresenting Catholic teaching, the Administrative Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops affirms the statements that have been issued by Cardinal Justin F. Rigali, chairman of the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, and Bishop William E. Lori, chairman of the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Doctrine. We confirm the Catholic Church’s constant teaching about the sanctity of all human life from the moment of conception and the intrinsic evil of abortion. As the teachers of the faith, we also point out the connectedness between the evil of abortion and political support for abortion. We plan to discuss the practical and pastoral implications of these serious matters at the U.S. bishops’ November 10-13, 2008 general meeting in Baltimore.

Oh God I hope the good men like Chaput take charge of this thing.

Why does a meeting of the USCCB turn my stomach so quickly?

Better yet, cry out for His forceful descent upon those men.

Since rebuking and instructing Pelosi and Biden doesn’t work, maybe the next step is excommunication.

Indeed. They wear red, they need to be His servants.

I hope the Conference not only corrects Pelosi’s and Biden’s false claims of Catholic doctrine on abortion, but remind Catholics that persons engaged in a continuing sin (such as the advocacy of abortion) may not receive Holy Communion.

Why does a meeting of the USCCB turn my stomach so quickly?

Probably because they are known for enjoying multi-thousand dollar dinners at places like the Shoreham hotel, on the parishioners' dime, after long indecisive circle-jerks where nothing is resolved.

Too many of them, for sure. Far too many of them.

The USCCB screwed this up the last time. Among other things, they let the liberal bishops persuade them to include several clauses that seems to suggest that abortion is equivalent to “racism.”

Well, Abortion is murder. It is a deadly sin. Racism is an evil, but there is a big difference between, let’s say, killing blacks and calling them names. Neither is nice, neither is good, both are sinful, but it should be obvious that calling someone a bad name is not equivalent morally to killing him.

As it is, too many people say, in response to the charge that Obama is an extreme proponent of abortion, that it would be “racist” not to vote for him.

No, it’s not racism, and in any case, racism is not the moral equivalent of abortion or murder. It’s vital that the bishops’ statement should leave NO ROOM for those who pretend that they are.

Thanks to Pelosi and Biden the USCCB has had their ability to disemble circumscribed. This is a simple issue. To kill or not to kill, that is the question (with apologies to the Bard).

They don't seem to be trying to dissemble. This appears to be a straight-forward statement. But I'm Lutheran; what appears straight-forward to me may not be. ;)

“They don’t seem to be trying to dissemble.”

They cannot. The truth is. Thanks to the moronic, in not satanic demoncrats they had no choice. Only the Truth can work.
